Thinking about leaving SoCal

At the risk of counting chickens before the roo has even crowed...

As many of you know Mr Saddi and I were in an auto accident a few months ago, and both of us require surgery and physical therapy. Because of the injuries we got a lawyer to settle the claim for us (I've worked with friends who were broke took the 1st settlement offered and still have life-long disabilities to live with). Currently I'm in a wheelchair and can not go back to my old line of work (I have the lisc. to teach preschool, and am in grad school online to get my masters in edu.), even after surgery, there won't be a 100% recovery, the plan is for me to walk again, not dance. Mr saddi runs the internet sales division of a golf company, and his job is 100% portable. We've come to the conclusion that the settlement would buy far more land/house in parts other than SoCal, and his boss is agreeable to him working from a home office (although he'll miss the mid day beer and cornnuts break). Since i'm currently a house-mom, figuring out places to look at is my task.

So some very basic idea of what we want:

I'd like someplace with mild/modorate snowfall, to me this means 1-2 months of white stuff on the ground, that is not so deep one would loose a cat under the drifts. Really a snowman and a sledding hill for the kids would be about it.

3-5 acres (more if the price is good) To make this more even, say 50K price

A house already on site would be ok, but if we need to build that would be fine (we'd have to make an existing one wheelchair friendly anyway).

Since we have the boys in a charter school, the local school doesn't matter much, it may later if I can re-use my degree to teach.

We're fairly laid back tree hugging hippies, so places with issues as to race/religion/clannishness may not work out so well.

Since BYCers are everywhere I thought I'd get some thoughts from everyone on the area you live.

It's 2:30 AM so if I mispell, or plain don't make sence, well, the time most likely has nothing to do with it.

So sorry to hear about all your troubles. Are you willing to relocate far? When researching places to live (years ago DH and I were able to pick any location in the US to move to) we found NC to fit all of our needs. The mountains are beautiful, the weather here is perfect. We get 4 lovely seasons. Winter is winter but it's short. We had lots of snow this year, but it doesn't stay long. Spring is awesome, fall is just plain gorgeous and summer doesn't get too hot. Average temp in summer is 85. The cost of living here is low. Taxes are a little higher than what we had in Mphs, Tn but still very affordable. There is tons of land and homes for sale and at great prices right now. But where ever you decide to move, I wish you the best.

Oh and regarding religion, etc. issue, although close to the bible belt, the people here tend to mind their own business.....which I like.

Michigan is a wasteland. I wouldn't still be here unless I had no other choice. I'm looking at eastern New Mexico if I don't outright move down by my ma south of dallas.

I live in PA but my "fantasy" place would be South Carolina. Winter is winter here - and this past winter was really snowy. Pennsylvania is a beautiful state, especially in the northern part of the state (at least that's my opinion). But it can be c-c-c-cold!

Good luck with your decision. I must say that I'm envious. We talk and dream about moving south, but I would be heartbroken to move away from my family.

No. it's 5AM.

I took a fall and even with the pain meds.... well it's bad.

I'm pretty happy with southen Indiana, and parts of northern Ky, although as I get older the south becomes more and more appealing...lol. The issues of "...places with issues as to race/religion/clannishness..." seem to be regional within both states, probably moreso in Ky. {

} But both have lovely places that meet your criteria tolerance-wise, have beautiful land reasonably priced, enjoy four seasons w/moderate snowfall in winter. Good luck with your searching...that's a difficult decision. And I wish continued and speedy recovery with your health

Come to Wisconsin! Snow in the winter and warmth in the summer. But not unbearable. Lakes and woods. Great people. Land is reasonably priced. Crime rate is low. Everything a person could want. Central to eastern Wisconsin os the best.
