I escaped WIsconsin when I was 19. Beautiful to visit, but I HATED living there. Mosquitos in summer, -30º temps in Winter, blood suckers in the water, wood ticks....
ACK!
We live just south of Dallas- about 30 minutes- in a small town and although there are religious folk here, in the 5 years we've been here I've never felt harassed
or put on the spot or asked questions about our religion so please don't let that hinder your enthusiasm for Texas.
And to the OP- we moved from SoCal to Texas and absolutely had reverse sticker shock when we were house shopping. We literally laughed out loud at how much
property you can buy here vs. in SoCal with the same money.
I have never once had buyers remorse or regretted moving here from Southern California and when
folks ask how we like it I always answer- "You couldn't pay me to move back". Understand, I was born and lived in Southern California (back when being 'native born'
there meant something..) and I was proud of it, proud of my family before me that built their homes there and settled among the orange groves and raised us
but leaving was the best choice I've ever made. The schools here are great, the people are friendly and the kids (with a small exception) grow up respectful and kind
and violence is almost nil. I honestly didn't mean for this to turn into a rant against SoCal and a soap box preaching session for Texas but really- I can't say enough
good things about the place, the people, etc etc etc!
