thinking bout selling my paint

400 sounds about right for price per pound lol. I would really consider donating her to a riding school for disabled people. At least to ensure a good home. Nowadays people are always looking to make a quick buck and the turnaround horse traders are the WORST!

IF I were a total jerk and didn't care for animals, I would pay 400.00 for that horse, bring her straight to a dogfood packing auction and resell her to highest bidder. Chances are I would get more then 400 bucks, plus why should I feed her till sale time?

Why is every talking about horse meat and kill buyers? They don't allow that in this country any more which is why the horse market is in the mess that it's in!

BTW, in Michigan $400 is a lot for a horse. Most are being given away.

I don't know where you are living ( I mean, i am not familliar with the area) but I know in the 'horse country' section of my state people are hard pressed to sell much of anything. And my friend in Connecticut just GAVE their daughters horse ( appraised three years ago for her purchase price of 80k) to a therapeutic riding school because no one will pay 10k for her now in this economy. and this is a sound, beautiful moving imported warmblood... not that your horse is not nice... my point is more that horses without issues are going for free right now.... just look at Chronicle of the horse's give away forum! it's gaining pages a night!

I did not mean to offend you but if you rescued this mare then you have to at least somewhat grasp the fate of many horses today.. and blame who you will but im guessing the massive cutbacks and loss of income for many families is not going to right itself overnight. . . . of course you can breed your mare as you see fit but my point is that you're dumping a horse that you rescued and then getting grouchy about my asking you to consider the fact that every foal you create right now has a good chance of ending up like the horse you saved unless you personally keep each one ( which you've stated you can't do) . I'm confused where the kill stations come in because in my eyes the equine plight right now is directly connected to peoples loss of income. not alot of people have the extra 200-2000 to toss to boarding facilities so they get rid of the horses.

I've kept every rescue that I have gotten until i could find a suitable home or situation for them. I've had one returned because he did not work out. I've never SOLD a rescue..its just how i help the animals that have helped me so much during my entire life when i have the ability and extra money.

the poster didnt ask wether to breed their mare again or not. its no ones decision but theirs to make.

i find it very honorable that you know that 5 horses is a lot to feed! rehomeing (or selling) critters is hard. i know i am very attached to all my horses, and we are in the process of selling them right now. 2 registered paint horses and a registered QH . its hard to make the decision!
i would make sure you ask around when a person comes to look at her. ask about their vet, and references, that may help in finding her a great home!! good luck, im in the same boat, trying to sell 3 really well trained horses too

I mentioned horse meat because whether or not it is legal is not even on the table. There is a black market for everything, I was just shining a bit of light on that so the OP would be aware that even in the US, horses can be, and are, slaughtered for their meat. Sad truth, but truth nonetheless.

Also I have no idea the market price for a horse where OP lives. Here in California horses are sold for 500-800 bucks so that's why I mentioned that. Also didn't mean to offend, but just wanted to offer some insight on stables that would LOVE to have that sweet mare for handicap kids, or adults. To me, personally, a good home is more important then cash. Even if I AM hurting for money.

Just FYI, While it is illegal to slaughter horses for meat in the United States, it is NOT illegal to ship them to the Mexican and Canadian plants.

Also, it is insane to blame the closure of slaughter plants in the US for the current state of the horse economy. We're in a recession and horses are a luxury item that was over produced prior to said recession and therefore gluts a market that cannot bear the volume. Has 0 to do with slaughter imo.

Thats what I WAS asking for my completely broke to ride, healthy, high-trained gelding. I'm getting NOTHING...and he's healthy and UTD on everything. Needs a tune up, yes, but thats about it.

I'd try rescues and riding schools. You might find a bleeding heart to take her.

..that horse today here in MN would bring you $100 if you could get a bid on her..we just GAVE my hubbys 17 year old healthy QH gelding to the MN school of theraputic riding..just because the only thing we used him for anymore was driving double and he couldnt keep up with the youngsters anymore,,he would try but we felt bad for him,if they wouldnt have taken him he would have stayed here until he died..REALLY well trained horses here are still bringing a good price,,but I am talking buy today and work on cattle tomorrow and win trained..the slaughter market is still there, they just ship then across the borders,,Japan sends ships over here with buyers, they go to big sales, like the 3 day sales, like the draft sale in Iowa and they buy them, put them on the ship,as soon as they are out of US waters they process them and they are frozen and ready for sale when they get back to Japan..the only thing closing the slaughter plants in US did was cause the middleman to get richer, the family that cannot feed their horse used to be able to sell it for 60+ cents a lb,,now when they really could use that money they cant barely get 12 cents a lb..thats about what good fat killers are bringing right now.

its illegal to sell them for human consumption,,but you can buy them, butcher them and feed them to your dogs,,or eat yourself as long as you dont sell the meat..that is still totally legal.

I don't see anything skinny on that horse at all? Maybe I'm not looking where you're looking?

Have you tried horseville.com?
What about craiglist? (I know several people have said not to use it, but honestly? It's done a lot of people alot of good.)
horsetopia.com?
equinenow.com?
equinehits.com?
equine.com?

Just some ideas. I "believe" equinenow and equinehits are some that don't charge a fee. Horseville.com definitely doesn't charge a fee for your ad (with photos).

I would get some conformation photos of her so people can see her body. Then maybe use the other photos for email.
