thinking bout selling my paint

The horse market is NOT in the mess it is in because the US slaughter plants shut down,.. it is in the mess it is in because of a) overbreeding b)backyard breeding.

Slaughterhouses were only mopping up a bit of the mess caused by overpopulation and overbreeding.

Supply is outstripping demand, best way to solve is to reduce the supply, great way to do that is to stop breeding unless your horse has something truly outstanding to offer (and probably should have the show record to prove it). Same thing with dogs and cats, except we have never had slaughterhouses here for them so we could export the meat... we have kill shelters.

Sounds like you're dead set on selling her. I hope her new owners don't breed her, hernias are often genetic in horses according to my veterinarian.

I would bet everything I own that if they opened back up US slaughter houses and changed the semi trucker horse hauling laws to the ones they had 14 years ago the price of horses would go up.

Yup

In the past years, slaughterhouses and "kill" buyers provided a way to "absorb" excess horses in the market and an end (albeit unhappy) for horses that just shouldn't be ridden or handled by people.

Yes, there is a recession, with the horse industry made worse by the fact that horses are not going to slaughterhouses. I live in Michigan, about 3 1/2 hours from the Sault crossing and 3 hours from Port Huron/Sarnia crossing and few if any horses are ending up in Canadian plants. Then again, our ports of entry into Canada are few (3) and since it is a water boundary and you have to cross a bridge (or tunnel), they HAVE to go through customs. Canadian officials would probably get suspicious if someone came through with a stock trailer full of horses and no vet certificates, etc... on them

tex .. do you know how she got blind in one eye? Also, does she have any bad habits .. Is she gentle to handle from the ground? I'm looking for a horse that my DD13 and DH can handle and ride with me.

I think they would both think she is pretty .. and being blind in one eye doesn't bother me if she's not "goofy" about it ..

Feel free to PM me if you like .. let's talk.

actually donating her to a private ridding school or therapy school for children would gather you much more then $400.00 in tax rebates. when my family outgrew our pony we donated him to the Milton Hershey school. the tax credit was much more then $400

and the MHS gives these animals a home for life. they are even now hurting for well broke sane horses. looks and minor issues are ignored when the kids safety is paramount.

Also my two cents on the slaughter houses. There are horses that are totally shot and health wise nothing more then expensive pasture pets. I can afford to keep my animals threw this, not everyone can. There are also horses that are seriously messed up in the head, mostly threw human error but sometimes they have genetic mental issues. Id rather see these horses humanly put down then suffer and starve or be abused. Id rather see a total wacko horse be humanely put down then see it hurt the next innocent and uneducated person that gets duped into buying or rescuing it.

most of them are going up through MN,MT and ND..they are going to Canada by the truck loads,,they have vet certs on them, the killers can afford to pay for them when they only pay pennies per lb of horse and sell them for $$ per lb..

It is the "humanly" part that gets me. Watching some of the videos of how they are killed and how they are transported makes me sick. Cows seems to walk along to their deaths pretty calmly for the most part. Horses on the other hand, well they smell the blood and they hear the screams and they die in terror. I mean heck my girl freaks out if the wind blows hard much less if she heard all that!

Slaughter the way it is currently conducted for horses I am against, quick humane euthanasia I am not.....just my opinion.

txredneckmedic , I'll be praying that you find her a good home. I PERSONALLY believe that sane, safe horses are worth their weight in gold. They are certainly worth the cost that you DON'T spend in the emergency room and recovering.

You know.. I opened this thread and was greeted by pictures of a beautiful mare and an OP with a decision to make - and Now It looks like this thread is ANOTHER fight between "right and wrong" . I didnt even get halfway into the second page before i didnt want to read much more because it makes me sick that BYCers are arguing so and bringing in topics that dont even have to be brought up because they cause so much contraversy!

I think you have a gorgeous horse by the way - and I wish you luck in finding her a loving home

That is true. Before the slaughter houses were closed down, the bottom on a good sized healthy horse was around $5-600. If you went to an auction looking to buy a riding horse, you knew that you'd have to outbid the killers to that point.

Now, with no killer action, theres no market. Period. I bought a pitiful little pony 2 weeks ago for $10 out of an auction. Full grown horses were getting no bids. Nothing. Not even $10.

Theres a couple of horse processers here in Ocala. They are busier than they've ever been. Either they pick up dead horses, or they will come an put them down (shoot them) and take them. But you have to pay them to come and get them. Im not sure where the meat goes, large cat rescues and zoos Ive heard. Because of the lack of a market, people are calling them to pick up perfectly good sound serviceable horses. Its cheaper to pay them $75 to come and pick up your horse than keep feeding it, if you can't afford it.
