I've had one of my chickens die before hatching before, but I don't know about quails...My golden giant quail have gone into lockdown yesterday. Now my question is if i mix golden giant quail to my wild (pharaoh as i have been told that is what they are called) quail what type of colouring can i expect to come out of this breeding. Also heard that there is a fatal gold gene issue where a % die before they hatch anyone know more about this and how to avoid this?
I have lost only a handful if you will of chicken chicks compared to the 400 give or take that i have hatched most lost were from bought in eggs vs my own flocks eggs. It sucks but it unfortunately happens.I've had one of my chickens die before hatching before, but I don't know about quails...

Im glad you found info in this thread helpful. Whats it like to own ducks? I was thinking about getting a few cuz well i just think they are cute.I have 6 jumbo Coturnix eggs being shipped to me right now. Years ago I had button quail but they were too tiny and flighty to be useful.
I just restarted my backyard flock (I had just a pair of runner ducks for 5 years) and now have a pair of Pekin juveniles (accidentally and likely on their way to a friend’s farm), 2 leghorn hen chicks and 4 barnyard mix runner ducklings (but I won’t be keeping males so they’re in a wait and see phase.)
I thought quail would round me out nicely. Thank you for starting this thread it has been very helpful.
I love ducks. So much personality. I describe them as chickens with ADHD. They can be messy because they love water so much but I think they’re worth it. And the eggs are amazing for baking.Im glad you found info in this thread helpful. Whats it like to own ducks? I was thinking about getting a few cuz well i just think they are cute.
