Thinking of getting into quails any tips?

No, I wouldn't mix chicks with that age difference. There is just too much size difference.

No, you can’t safely mix chicks with that big of a size difference, even with no aggression, the big ones can crush the littles by accident. Plus the babies need heat and the adults don’t. Sometimes adults will adopt and care for chicks, but don’t expect juveniles to do that. You can combine them with the adults at 4-5 weeks in most cases. At 3 weeks you could mix them with slightly older juveniles.

Yeah listen to the others, never mix different aged chicks, I don't believe anyone who says they do this with 100% success rates. With respect to how many girls you have, 100% girls would be pretty amazing to be honest I'd love that. But I doubt you do that would be quite some odds!! How you finding them so far compared to your other birds?

Well compared to my chickens when they were chicks these quail chicks smell less (i was told they stink more then chickens). Of course almost 2 weeks old and they have loads of feathers coming in vs 5-6 weeks when my chicks start feathering out. But both are cute as youngsters and i cant wait to see them full grown in a few more weeks.

As for the all girls issues im still worried i swear everytime i look i just see what looks like as female feathering on them, which if i just wanted eggs and not to breed ya that would be great to have all girls, but i do want to breed so I'm hoping at least 1 is a male in this group. If not i have 50 golden giant quail eggs due the end of the month start of next that hopefully will have some males if i have that odd chance of all girls.

Im tempted to take some photos of them soon and post lol. At least then ppl can tell me im really being paranoid

It's too early to tell male or female by feathers, and that's if they're feather sexable. Look again in two more weeks.

I have been told japanese quail are feather sexable by their chest feathers males have a russet breast colour females have a speckled breast. Are quail fully feathered at 3-4 weeks as i have read a few articles saying they are.

They are really good they well pack eggs as well. They have both a website and a ebay account i have bought via there site and ebay they are fantastic cant fault them grant it only 2 orders with them but still really good sellers.

I have owned chickens for about 6 years now an i love them but multiple factors are having me look at other ways to get eggs and maybe meat (mostly eggs tho). I have seen a few youtube videos of homesteaders and preppers having quail they make them sound so easy.

I know eggs are not very big it looks like 3 or 4 would equal a medium size chicken egg. They mature and start laying quicker then chickens and some claim quail eggs taste better. Not to mention the hatching eggs are cheaper and easier to get a hold of then some of the chicken hatching eggs i wanted which is surprising.

But i want to hear the tips and stories from actual quail owners. Also books i did a quick look but i dont know why but most seem to have very low reviews so anyone know some good books? I have heard of Urban Quail Keeping by Karen J Puddephatt but that seems to be the only decent reviewed book if that makes sense.

Any info, stories, tips, tricks etc are greatly appreciated.

Here are some quail tips I learned from my own experience:
1.don’t get more than 3 and start Young so they will get tamed easier
2.always cut their wings the first time they are with you
3.keep them somewhere with sand or mud or shredded wood because they get poop stuck to their feet in slick surfaces like cardboard.
4.please make them enough space to run and flap their wings
5.adult quails don’t need much heat so a heat lamp won’t be necessary

you can tell the difference between male and female by touching their but lol.if they get white slime out of their vent they are a male and if not its female

Yea i heard of the white slim or foam as some call it. I was hoping that would be a last resort other then listening for the males mating call if you will..
