A side note on dogs that bark a lot...they tend to go deaf earlier, from too much barking too close to their ears. If they would bark more farther from their ears, they might retain their hearing for longer. This also applies to those breeds of dogs that tend to listen to too much loud music on their i-pods.
yes, the icelandics that we have come into our grooming shop are barkers, very similar to shelties. If they are something you are interested in though, meet some in person and talk to some breeders
I know theyare in the Terrier Group, but they don't have typical feisty terrier personality.
Maybe your experience with the breed is limited?? Having spent considerable time with two different lines (american & scottish) I would tell anyone considering a Patt that they are ALL TERRIER and then some! And if you do not intend to give these dogs a meaningful job (preferably hunting & killing vermin) than you would be doing the dog a huge disservice.
Thanks Everyone! I am really glad I posted this thread
I certainly have had a lot of researching to do since I started. Re-looked at several breeds and gave some new-to-me breeds a close look.
I have narrowed the list down to the German Pinscher, Mini Australian Shepherd and Papillon.
Yesterday Hubby and I were talking and I brought up that I would like him to pick our next dog (small dog) if I could pick our large dog. He thought about that and said it seemed fair. So then I sweetened the pot for him telling him about the German Pinscher and he's very interested. I told him that they were a good watch dog and they were more sturdy than the Min Pin. He really liked the idea and I found a breeder in Bellingham, a town within driving distance from me. There's also another breeder not to far away in Oregon.
I think this will be our next dog.
The other suggestions I have gotten such as Whippet and Patterndale -- those don't fit my needs well. I've known a lot of Whippets, and while they are great dogs, they are not just not consistent in their desire to work for you. A Patterndale is too much dog for me under my current circumstances. I have heard exactly what Tonkatuff said -- VERY drivey working dogs. While I am sure I could channel that drive into something amazing, I don't feel like I want to battle the dog as a puppy and young adult -- thats what I had to do with my Deker RT. I dont' have the need for a ratter and I am leary of such a hard core working terrier with children.
I have not yet told my husband about the Mini Aussie. We know someone who has one and she's a crazy and very unbalanced dog. She needs a job but her owner won't work with her. I am going to see if he likes the looks of the GP and go from there.
So after this thread and Hubby and I finally deciding on another small dog breed. We have the following conversation last night after I showed him a couple breeder websites.
Him: I was thinking about getting another small dog. We already have a small dog though. And it looks like I'll be gone for 5 days a week in about a year or so for work...
Me: Ok. *exasperated* so what are you saying? I thought we were finally agreeing.
Him: No, hear me out. I'm not going back on getting a dog. But I was thinking it would be good for you and Hannah to have a large dog in the house again.
Me: But I don't want a Doberman, or another Shepherd.
Him: I know. I think we should get your Beauceron.
Me:
