i had posted about 2 hours ago, a little frantic cuz one of the other hens had blood on her breast (from feathers, not skin) and i was doom and gloom having this added onto the current situation. i just deleted it. i had put some blue kote on and so far so good, since theyre occupied with the reintroduction i guess...
about an hour ago we set up the "cage" for meatball (the hen we had separated) and got her in there. the others were more in her face (thru the fencing) at first of course, but cared a little less after some time. at one point they were just hanging out nearby and meatball was on a log, puffed up & closing eyes and started what seemed like purring (ive never heard that noise from them before), then one of the others purred, then meatball a couple of more times. the top hen had also been puffed up and closing eyes at that time. weird. i googled chicken purring and that seems to be something they may do when theyre content. was she doing a fake it til you make it or what?! ha.
its cold and windy out there, i cant imagine how they might be content, but i'll take it!!!
she's pecking stuff from the ground out there (sand, pebbles, idk what) but theres nothing i can do about that. and i guess if she's ok then it shouldnt be of concern.
we're thinking to bring her back in for one last night (at about 4pm), and i'll have to miraculously wake up early so my husband and i can get her back out there for the day and i'll let her out of the cage a bit before pre-coop time treat and hang with them for a bit to observe/referee if need be.
but also thinking maybe to just do today. give them their pre-coop feed/treats a little early, while meatball still caged. her treat being half water-soluble and half normal (to give her a little better chance at warmth overnight. let her out with them, observe/referee until coop time, then check her crop first thing in morning to make sure she's still doing ok. i am concerned about the cold tonight, tho i know they handle it ok, its just she wont have as much in her as normal that gets to me. im also concerned that the few hours she'll have been out there isnt enough for them not to bully her in the coop.
UPDATE: decided on bringing her in for tonight. her crop felt empty. just gave her some mixed feed/treat. gonna check on her in a couple of hours, maybe give her a little more, put her to bed about 9pm and get going tmrw dark & early!
