~*Third Annual Cinco de Mayo Turkey Hatch-Athon*~ all poultry welcome!

Ooooh, maybe the thread title should be "the enablers thread"
lol, there is the Incubators Anonymous thread, where you can expand your options to include every other type of fowl too. Oh wait, you can do that here too!! lol

Quote: Kale is int he brocalli and cauliflower family, but looks a bit like spinach and chard: stalk and a leave on top! lol Curley kale looks like curley parsley. ONe of those veg that likes the cool weather and with a bit of frost it is sweeter. VERY cold toelrant and one of theose good- for- you- crusiformes.

96 HIll and you at them all by 2 months ago-- those must have been wonderfull potatos. How do youstore themover the winter??

Bought Strawberry plants yesterday. We came up with the idea of using old fencing to make a tube, and use a heavy metal stake to support the structure as it will be heavy once filled with soil. Stick plants in the sides. Wonder if this is a good idea, or if any one knows why I should NOT do this.

It worked, it worked! I had to buy turkey eggs from ChooksChick here for the HAL because my girls decided they didn't feel like laying yet. Stinkers!!! Well, I came home from work yesterday and found a TURKEY EGG!!!!!! Oh sweetness! I put my one lil Narr egg in the bator with the other eggs. It will be a day behind but I've done staggered hatches before. Not fun and I pull my hair out but I love my turkeys!!!

I was out there doing the HAPPY DANCE and entertaining our neighbor!!!

Abso-smurfly! I think they are being tortured right now. I can see all of them out there pacing waiting to be let out of the pen to free range. LOL! I think I better sign off and go baby my feathered children.

Its a yellow potatoe, idr what they're called. But they almost taste buttery. They aren't extremely high yielding, but our fav. Lol

We put them in a wood basket with a towel over them out in the storage shed, or sometimes in our spare room. Just gotta keep them dark and cool, but allow air flow.

How about a little gardening conversation?? MOst of the US is finally free of snow-- or almost. We have an erant pile here and there mostly in the cold shadows. BUt . . . . .

THe soil is dry enough to be worked. The kids jumped in and dug the pea trenches. After showing them how to plant 2 10 foot rows, I handed them 2 more packets and gave instructions on where to plant them. Now I know it wan't go like clock work-- they are 10 and 12 afterall-- but I like to show them that I beleive in their abilities. When I checked in they handed me packets still half full!!! Sent them back to empty the pkgs-- just hope they remembered which variety when where!! lol

Mammoth Melting Sugar--4 1/2" edible flat pods on 4 foot vines
Snowbird--3 " edible pods who knows how tall ( bought in honor of SNowbird)
Sugar Snap--eaten whole or shelled, which means I wont waste time shelling

THen went and bought radishes and kale.

And praying birds keep out!!! lol

ANyone else planting to keep their mind off the eggs??

I am so far behind with my planting.. but I did manage to get the keyhole garden planted the other day.. potatoes.. a few herbs.. strawberries.. tomatoes and peppers...

out in the battle zone I call a front yard (because the deer and every other critter tries to kill everything I plant) we put in grapevines, raspberries, mulberries and blackberries... granted the bigger ones were planted this past fall.. i did add a bunch more raspberries and blackberries (for our future munching and winemaking endeavours)..

I still have seeds to plant.. gonna try doing that today.. no idea where the plants will go once they have sprouted!

Quote:
yeah.. we love strawberries and potatoes too.. at least once the potatoes are dug it will make room in the garden for the fall veggies to go in..
these strawberries are plants.. I still have the seed ones to plant.. grr.. no room for them though.. so I'll have to get creative

you'll need something to line the fence with to keep the dirt in there if you get heavy rains.. maybe some hardware cloth or similar?

our potatoes never make it through the entire winter... lol.. my husband eats them too fast!

but when I TRY to store them .. I make sure they have most of the dirt brushed off.. allow the skins to get dry (not dried out.. just good and dried off from being in the dirt).. then I hang them in mesh onion bags in the pantry (dark and cool)

THat is a new concept haning the potatos to keep them in circulated air and dry. Love it.

Maybe the wire fencing won't be the best idea. Maybe use pallets instead- - - back to the drawing board.

BR turkey is in the oven. I let it rest for several days and while the joints are nice and loose again, the skin has dried out. Arrrggggg . . . . I truely appreciate the perfect store bird now and the work that goes into presenting the perfect product.

Need a solution to the dring out-- perhaps a clothe diped in dilute vinegar?

HOnestly tosing it right into the oven is so much easier.
