~*Third Annual Cinco de Mayo Turkey Hatch-Athon*~ all poultry welcome!

BR turkey is in the oven. I let it rest for several days and while the joints are nice and loose again, the skin has dried out. Arrrggggg . . . . I truely appreciate the perfect store bird now and the work that goes into presenting the perfect product.

Need a solution to the dring out-- perhaps a clothe diped in dilute vinegar?

HOnestly tosing it right into the oven is so much easier.
I probably missed part of this conversation but…..I don't "rest" birds any more. I used to (when I did it was in a pot of water in the fridge so never had issues with skin drying out) because I was told that the resting period is essential to having a tender, tasty bird. But one processing day I didn't have any room in the fridge so put the bird immediately in the crockpot on the low (8-10 hour) setting and it was the moistest, most flavorful bird we've ever eaten. The meat was literally falling off the bones and it got rave reviews from everyone. So I've never rested a bird since then.

Turkeys don't fit in my crockpot so I simulate the crock cooking with a turkey sized oven roasting bag. Put the bird in the bag, stick it in the oven on a very low temp for 8-10 hours - same result.

Maybe  Yukon GOld??? Lots of posibilities once you can find a good source-- used to be 100's of potatos which is always a good thng to have variety.

RIght,  potatos need complete darkness and some moisture  and coooool room.

Will you try another potato? A red or a purple??

Yes!! Yukon gold that it. Lol I doubt any new potatoes this year, but eventually I'm sure. I need to find one that makes BIG baking potatoes! Yum! :)

So um... I need help figuring out how to get all the eggs I have to fit in my incubator.

Help! The 4 duck eggs can come out of their carton if needed.

My jacket should be Robins Egg Blue with white pipping and lots of sparkle.

My DD planted cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage, sugar snaps, and onions last weekend.

I still have the 6 duck, 8 turkey, and 1 goose egg going under the goose. Kinda worried about her because I haven't seen her leave the nest in 3 days. I know she is getting up to poop, but haven't seen her come out of the house. I have been giving her a dish of food and a fresh bucket or water everyday.

I have married down which of the 10 dozen chicken eggs that will be going in the incubator Monday. My turner holds 45 and will be loaded. Mist will be EE and Silkie/ Sizzle with a few other bantam. I thought about slipping the goose a couple of LF chicken eggs to go with the turnkey, but I have bantam that should hatch next weekend so I will put them together. Now its supposed yo be in the high 70's and 80's this weekend do I'm going outside to play. :)

Quote: Honestly, I dont usually wait either-- process and in the roasting pan!! I too have found just a good cooking works wonders and leftovers are the makings of great soup!!

In this case I ran out of time as the last feather was plucked as I had to rush off to an event. Tossed the WHOLE thing in the 'frig until I had 10 minutes to finish processing.

SO for those of you that have not tried processing and roasting-- know either way works.

( I actually oiled this bird because the skin had dried out and I didn't know what else to do to minimize further damage.)

Count me in again! I swore I wouldn't hatch many turkey eggs this year (just a few for the boys) since last year was a disaster in our homemade cabinet incubator. Well my neighbor is an enabler and lent us his 2 hovabators, we had a communal nest I was going to let the turkeys hatch but no one claimed it and it got up to 37! Set 56 turkey eggs on Tuesday & the other bator is still empty! Can my straight jacket be over-nighted?

I actually can't really tell what is in the last picture.

For cramming in eggs, try without the cartons. You can put them all tightly against one another and then use a wall of egg carton or cardboard or whatever to keep them falling over if you end up not having enough eggs to have a tight bottom layer.

It's a such and a goose that just hatched. Im trying to get better pictures.

And the cartons are because they were shipped so they need to stay big end up for at least a week. I think I have an idea for it. The packaging says my bator should hold 42 chicken eggs. Well I have 19 chicken, 30 ducks, and 2 geese.
