Im ao depressed. Im pretty sure one of narshies three polish eggs gave up. It was the slowest at growing. I candles it with a relly weak flash light and it disnt have big veins or a big air cell like her other two eggs. There was a weird runny substance that went around the top bu the air cell if i tilted the egg. I can see the babys beak and head but im not too sure about movement. Its day 17 now. Does this little baby sound like a quitter?

Take a push pin and tap a hole into the air pocket. If it hasn't drowned already it may be suffering from low oxygen. Once it has internally pipped like this it is safe to put a hole in the shell in the air pocket.

bantambury, do you understand about the difference between internal pip and external pip?
Internal pip is where they punch through into the air cell and start breathing air. You won't see any break in the shell at this point but if you candle, you can see them moving in the air cell.
External pip is where they punch a little hole in the shell so they can start breathing air outside the egg.
17 days would be early for an internal pip but it is possible. What the PP was suggesting is to punch a pin prick in the shell at the air cell end. Be very careful not to crack or break the shell more than the pin prick. This will allow additional oxygen to enter the egg.

From your description it sounds as if it is internally pipped. If so it is ok. That would also explain why fluid is in the air cell.

OK. so, i wanted to add some chicks to marshies chicks once they hatch. Now im thinking only two of her eggs will hatch, so i wanted to add some other chicks feom my breeder.
Heres the thing. My chicks are due to hatch on the 29th of april. My breeder has The BAs i want hatching on the 7th of may, and they wont go on sale until the 9th.
This means any chicks of mine that hatch will be approx. 7 days older than the BAs i want. Is this too old to add day old chicks with week old chicks? Ive done it before but i havent added chicks this far apart for a broody.

Guess I next need to do a little reading on where to snip and care of the wound post " quick snip" .
you snip just beyond what would be their "thumb" on the wing (it's actually the metacarpus that is removed).. and only one wing is pinioned.. I always snip the right wing
no after care if you pinion them around day 2 since the bone hasn't really formed yet by then and there isn't much blood at all going to the tip.. the longer you wait the more bleeding you will encounter because there will be more growth to the wing tip... on day 2 it's barely a drop if that... also.. pick up the duckling (or turkey or whatever).. make the snip and drop them back into the brooder... the longer you hold them the more blood loss you will get on older birds because their heart will race a bit more being held.. I have snipped them as late as three weeks of age.. but you will encounter a lot more bleeding at that stage and might need to pinch the wound or use a bit of blood stop powder

Let me recap to make sure I understand the location to cut---
At the yellow line in the diagram, I see the cut as thru the DIgit II and metacarpusIII-- cut is made to the side of the radial joint NOT thru the joint.
Does this apply to all fowl??
