Thirty years and now a mystery!

Thank you all, I am going to check on "those roosters"...as this makes sense...and I will address the young chicks with a little oyster shell....perhaps it is something simple...calcium...although I am careful and provide a variety of foods...you just never know. Thanks again all!!!!

I culled - permanently - a cockerel who was injuring my pullets during mating. Broken necks twice and another pullet with a broken hip. I suspected him as the cause because I saw him rough with pullets. Mayture hens would not put up with his behavior and the pullets were terrorized, always squawking and fighting. I found the first 2 victims just here or there, not dead right away, but with no clue as to why... And they died in my arms Then i saw him chase down a pullet into a corner and yank her head back as he STOMPED not treaded her.

He didn't live to do that again.

That's the first thing I thought of when reading your post.

! Great to have you here but sorry to hear about this mystery! I don't have anything to add - I'm sorry. But I hope you get it solved soon!

... in the last two months I have lost six hens to broken legs. Has anyone else had a problem with a 'reoccurent' breaking leg issue. It began with an older hen and has ended with two of my slightly over a year old girls...I have looked over their area and cannot figure out how this is happening. Does anyone have any ideas...
I'll go along with Merak's disease also known as "range paralysis. The only other thing that I can think of is Botulism.

I think the previous posters have covered all the possibilities. Hope you get to the bottom of this!

Linden Hill, I apologize, I launched into a search for answers and forgot my Southern Hospitality. Welcome to BYC!!!!

Good information, thank you, I have to take care of this....of course the rooster that I believe is causing the damage is the lowest in pecking order (and the most handsome fellow...) and he does grab them by the neck feathers as they scream and try to run.......
