This Can't Be Real...

Have you submitted pics for the calendar?

https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/2020-byc-calendar-we-need-your-pics.1316696/

You'll have to do away with the watermarks, I'm afraid, but I think your pics are good enough for consideration!

At the moment I haven't submitted any but I was definitely considering it!

Do you think they would allow me to submit my watermarked versions on the thread and suppose if they did choose to use any, I'd then send over un-watermarked versions? I'm not entirely sure how it works :)

So gorgeous, Fur-N-Fowl. I consider you my top silkie role model on this site. Your birds are all so adorable/beautiful.

Would you mind telling me how you bathe your birds? I need to give mine a bath and I want them to be as beautiful as yours when I'm done (as if a bath could transform them that much, lol)

I love this one you posted of a roo on some other thread a while ago. He's so stinkin' cute I feel like I'm gonna have an aneurysm looking at him. I have 6 cockerels already and I still want to add him to my flock. Tranquilize him and mail him to me. Fly him first class even. :drool:drool:drool Does he have a name?

I'm actually working with the calendars, so I'd say sure, we can do that :) We email the members whose pics get shortlisted and ask for copies, so if yours make the cut, you can send us one without the watermark then.

Aw thankyou so much! Glad you enjoy my birds so much, I'm happy to hear that :D

Of course I'm happy to share! I just shared it on another thread when another Silkie owner asked. I'll link the quote here and hope it works correctly. If not, let me know and I can copy the post itself for you. Also if you have any other questions just ask! Here it is:

I started typing out my method and remembered I shared it not that long on another thread!

Here it is (slightly edited to make more sense) I hope it helps :)

Before you wash your birds, i'd say try shampoos and such on a small patch such as the legs/foot feathers since they tend to get the dirtiest. Like humans, animals can have allergies to certain ingredients. It's rare but always best to test it on a small part first. Also, just remember to keep all soapy products and water out of their eyes and nose/mouth.

Put the shampoo on an old toothbrush and brush its down into the feathers, following the way they flow.

For my white coloured birds I use a whitening shampoo but for the other colours I don't. The process is the same just without the whitening!

I wash all my Silkies in the bath one at a time with a shower hose. I don't have enough buckets do that other three bucket method :lau

Firstly I get my Chicken. Put her in a bath that's has some whitening shampoo squirted in and is filled to around the top of her legs.

I use a jug to get the water over her, using non soapy water over her crest.

Once she's wet through. I put whitening shampoo on her back and on the toothbrush and brush it onto her, following the flow of the feathers. I do this on all the body except the head.

Then rise off, and repeat with baby shampoo! Do the same with the toothbrush, of course be gentle. Don't scrub the feathers. I clean the crest with the baby shampoo.

Then wash this all off again with the hose, empty the bath then too and make sure all soap is rinsed away.

Then I use green swarfega on my Silkies legs and leg feathers. It brings them up lovely and gives them a shiny rubbery look! I also pop this onto a toothbrush and brush it down the legs, toes, leg feathers and nails. Then I fully wash off and give another rise.

I then go over their face with a cotton bud removing any dirt around her beak etc. I also add a very tiny amount of petroleum jelly to combs/wattles and such before drying.

I then gently squeeze any excess water off and put her in a towel and then off it is for a blow dry. She loves that part the most and relaxes so much.

Once dry, I use a very soft baby brush and brush the feathers the way they should be. Then voila, you have one clean Silkie Chicken.

With silkies, is advise washing the day before the show. They aren't like other birds that require oils to get back onto their feathers.

Some additional advice is to make them fluff up more, blow dry them from back to front (tail to head) and once dry, I use a very soft baby brush to fluff up their tails.

What type of birds do you have? :)

Ah yes, my Silkie cockerel is called Zoltan! (I know strange name)

He honestly is such a lovely Cockerel to have around. Very placid, gentle with his ladies and doesn't pull out their feathers. If the ladies aren't in the mood, he tends to leave them alone. He's not overly keen on being handled but he's not agressive in any way. When it comes to food, sharing it isn't always an option for Zoltan, he tends to gobble it for himself :lau

He does enjoy baths and blow drys though! He just chills throughout the process. I keep his nails pretty trimmed too so he's used to that now as well.

Let me just get my tranquilliser out and I'll get him sent over! :gig

You really would fall in love with him. He's quite feminine and I always say he has super pretty eyes. Definitely a unique cockerel!

Oh awesome, that'll be great Thankyou!

Could I ask if there is a limit on how many you can enter? I have read about the sizing requirements for the images.

Thanks so much. :) I picked up some whitening shampoo last weekend and am quite excited to give it a try. My babies are looking a bit yellow. Plus they got muddy in the rain and got juice from some grapes dripped on their heads...

I have a lot of different kinds. Right now I have 5 Silkie Broilers (don't worry, I'd never eat them), 3 Silver Spangled Hamburgs, 1 Rhode Island Red, 1 Australorp, 1 Silver Phoenix, 1 Self-Blue Cochin Bantam and 1 Barred Holland. I also have some little chicks in the brooder in my bedroom. 4 Self-Blue Cochin Bantams and 2 White Cochin Bantams.

And I'm in the process of adding some additional breeds: Barnevelder, Black Sumatra, Egyptian Fayoumi, and Blue Laced Red Wyandotte Bantam (BBS). They'll be arriving later this month and next month.

It means Sultan in Hungarian, right? That is my boss' son's name. So not that weird to me. I'm so used to hearing it. ;)

That's nice that he's gentle with the girls. I guess him gobbling down all the food instead of giving it to the ladies is the tradeoff. XD He does sound kind of effeminate. I like it. And I love his comb/wattles too. I've seen some walnut combs that look like a cancerous growth, they're so huge and nodular looking. His is very aesthetically pleasing. Has he won any contests?

Do all of your silkies enjoy the bathing process? And any tips for a first bath? I don't want my precious Princess Poof to hate me afterwords.

Do you just keep silkies, or do you have other birds too?

Congratulations.
Now I'm probably going to make myself extremely unpopular.
So, those chickens you've taken to the show, they now go into full quarantine conditions I assume, or do you cull them after showing?
