I officially nominate “Hoochie Mama” as the best-ever hen name.

I like to give little Micky a good scratching occasionally. He is almost always on his own because all the other chickens seem to dislike him. The I have to be careful when I pick him up though. The cute little devil bites.

Oh - and this photo is calendar-quality! The deadline is close, if not past - but there's always next year's ... and I, for one, would love to see Micky looking back at me every day for a whole month!

I think so too!
Whenever I tell any of my friends about her, they all laugh, and then add Jersey Giant to their wishlist!

I named her earlier this spring, when she went broody, and always looked like this:

What a handsome fellow! I started dabbing my thumb & forefinger with a little petroleum jelly (Vaseline with no scent) and massaging my Sammy's wattles. Once he realizes I'm not going to eat him, he stops biting. He still fusses when I first pick him up, but I think that's mostly for show, because now he closes his eyes and completely relaxes when I do it!
I'll try to get pictures, but I'll need an extra set of hands ... kinda hard to find around here, these days and the dog is a lousy photographer!

Micky does the same thing! I'll have to try the petroleum jelly. I've never thought to use it on their wattles.

Thank you. I enjoy Micky. He has a big crow for such a little man. He is rough with the girls so he can't be trusted with a flock and he doesn't get along with the other roosters. He tries to seek out and destroy but he has no ammo. He is lucky that I'm a sucker for a pretty face.

Pardon the mess. They picked that spot just so they could destroy that weed mat. I was trying to pull it up when they decided to "help" me out. It has been properly disposed of.

We have our giant flock of five pullets in our small city backyard on a corner lot with lots of walkers going by.

I’m enjoying the thought of going out on the back porch (better yet, my husband going out) and hollering, “Hoochie Mama! C’mere Hoochie Mama!” It would not go over well.

I used to have a neighbor who had a stubborn little dog named "Nookie". It was always fun to see her standing on her back porch, in the evenings, yelling "Nookie, Nookie, Nookie!"
