It looks like maybe there was a tiny fissure. The chick probably died, and as the gases built up, the pressure forced the gunk inside to slowly seep out of the fissure, which hardened as it came in contact with the air.

Sort of like a tiny disgusting volcano. Not enough pressure to explode, but enough to make a cone.
