This is what happens when you keep a goose in the house! *newER pic!*

Hi

She looks alert and bright eyed so Im sure there's every chance she'll quickly recover. A few days with grass, a good quality waterfowl growers pellet and sunshine will soon have her on the road to recovery. The pale legs and bill will soon colour up in the outdoors.

One other member recommended taping the wings and I'd go along with that idea to minimise the wing deformity. Hopefully she'll be able to integrate with your other youngsters and enjoy their company.

Best of luck

The important thing is that you are now in possession of this baby. I'm confident that under your care, it will recover. I'm not sure what the lady's ultimate goal was. I have seen geese in the city before. One house in the middle of town had a goose that was better than a guard dog, it was their yard goose. When my kids would pass there every morning and afternoon on the school bus, they would see this goose. I know that it lived at least 20 years. I also found out that as soon as the goose died, that she put the house up for sale. The only reason she stayed there after her hubby passed was for the goose. Sometimes it does work out.

Thanks everyone! I have never had to tape wings before- where do I start? She is able to hold the one side up- sometimes. Most of the time they're just dragging though.

She initiated contact with the rest of the flock last night. Seems like they'll eventually be ok if she stays out of Momma's way. My dominant female is a bit of a bully sometimes.

We don't use tape. We use cotton string or Velcro tape. We tie one wing to the other and we span the back to hold the Velcro or string. So, wrap Velcro around one wing and then cross over the back to the other wing. Tighten so the wings are in line with each other. If the goose is uncomfortable, loosen a bit and then try to tighten again in a day or so. With Velcro, you can tighten a bit each day till the wings are in the proper position. We have 2 Africans right now that we did not get to and they look funny with angle wing. They are destined for the table. This was our own fault. We had them on too high protein diet. I had a severe injury to my shoulder and could not care for them as I should have. DH did his best. Next year it will be different.

Thanks- I will look for some velcro tape today- wouldn't hurt to have some of it around anyway!
Do you think dressing her up in all those little goose outfits could have made this condition worse? Or is it just poor health?

I'm hoping and praying that she didn't break a wing or dislocate anything. If you are able, hold on to her and manipulate the wing to see if she has pain or if it has full movement. Even if her wings never get to be perfect, is that really a problem. It's not for me because I don't show them. So if they're not perfect, so what, neither am I. LOL I know you will do right by this baby. Good luck to you!

It doesn't matter to me if she looks funny- I just want her to be healthy. BUT- I had already sold off the extra birds for this year so I almost had the flock down to a manageable size. Guess I better get to work on that winter pasture right quick! Thanks again

I suggest that you not tape unless the wing tips actually start to turn out. Her wings need exercise and she can't exercise her wings if they are taped.

If the wings are only drooping, then she will hold them up as soon as her muscles and tendons strengthen.

If the tips start to turn out, then that is a different situation and she should be taped to keep them in place.

I know you didn't

and I am glad this poor skinny pale thing is back with you and in the invigorating sunshine. How did the geese look that she swapped to you? I was thinking about this last night. I've only had my geese since March. I can't imagine keeping them in the house, if only for access to grass all day, and thinking about goose-proofing the house -

She might well make a fantastic parrot owner though

Well at least it doesn't look like she has angel wing, just that she's not strong enough to hold them up. The person probably had her wrapped up in something where she couldn't/didn't have to use her muscles to support them. Hope she gets too looking/feeling better, poor thing!

ETA: I agree with the "don't tape the wings unless they turn out" consensus on this one. She needs to be able to exercise her wings...most likely the problem is lack of exercise.
