This is why we don't trade outside of our personally known group!!!

I know we are mostly venting here, but please remember

In small towns, people KNOW their neighbors and their neighbor’s operations. They can decide to buy from Farmer Snug-and-Clean or Farmer Slack-and-Cheaper. Today a very tiny portion of the population KNOW the producers of their food beyond a company or a brand name. They cannot inspect premises themselves. In many cases those premises are in another country.

Remember back to the time of the muckrakers, when people were dying because of horrid but cost reducing food processing practices. Journalists exposed these practices, the public cried out and Food and Drug Regulations were born. Some journalists are purists by nature and are really trying to get important news out (however little the public wants to know). But almost all have to pay at least some attention to ratings. Nothing gets the public attention faster than horror stories about foods and drugs. And when the public is interested, they may act by contacting their representatives. And we get more Food and Drug Regulations. They exist because a population that cannot know about how its food was produced cannot make informed decisions about what to buy. The average city person wants to know that any food product they buy is safe to eat.

Our representatives are generally not practiced farmers or food processors. They need to ask someone for help in understanding how the regulations should be written that the public is asking for. If you were a politician looking for help, would you go to the guy on the corner who has 40 chickens, or Tyson who has 400 million? There is no reason to go ask the little guy, it might even be hard to find a little guy on some questions. Even if they go to folks in academia to ask how things should be set up, many of them have an interest in setting things up to benefit mass production, who support and use a lot of their research about making plants and animals grow faster on the cheap.

I am in Wisconsin and have NAIS registration. No one has ever come on my land to inspect my operation (chickens on pasture in the front yard where everyone can see them). Some of the statements regarding NAIS might be worded strongly to encourage discussion of the issue. I agree we need to continue to work to rework or remove these laws. Wisconsin is still a nice place to live.

I am within sight of two huge commercial turkey barns, and families involved in our 4-H club have commercial chicken barns of 50,000 broilers each. There are 6 commercial flocks within 5 miles of us. If I bring in a really lovely specimen of a rare breed that has a devastating poultry disease, I endanger the livelihoods of my friends and neighbors. You can bet my neighbors would expect me to destroy my flock in such a case. The “Government” is just enforcing what my neighbors would require to protect their own interests. When we talk about diseases, chemical dumping in run-off areas and streams or invasive species like the Emerald Ash Borer, these problems are not going to stay on my own land and be my own problem. They are going to affect my neighbors. My neighbors will want to prevent this adverse effect by cutting my affected trees, destroying my affected flocks and forcing me to clean up chemical dumps.

The Muscovy issue I can believe was simply one group (wildlife types) not knowing anything about the other (small agricultural types). I have a neighbor who loves to hunt skinny asparagus spears on the lead filled side of the road. Mine grow nice and thick and where it is easy to pick in my yard. He wants to be self-sufficient by living off the wild as a hunter/gatherer, I tend to prefer to cultivate/domesticate my own food. We just are not going to be aware of each other’s views. It isn’t a conspiracy to keep us from raising Muscovy’s, they simply did not know we actually raise them.

it is not a coincidence that rates of diabetes, heart disease, obesity, etc reflect the collusion between the FDA,
AG companies, chemical companies, etc...

track the growth of health insurance companies, pharmaceutical companies, and HMOs, see how they grow together, alongwith
the decisions of the FDA. They have no idea what the stuff they put in food does to us, nor do they care...

Remember how when you bought health insurance, you were covered for what ever made you ill, now you need additional
insurance to cover things we all used to be covered for... This is called growth, there are a lot in the media that will tell you that
capitalism, growth, and consumerism is good for you, don't believe it for a moment...

Just like communism has its faults so does capitalism, it is those that believe that rampant unchecked consumerism is good for everybody... The only ones it is good for is the very small percentage of the population that make obscene amounts of money at our expense...

Is there one corporate officer in this country worth a million dollars, NO!
Is there one athlete worth millions of dollars, NO!
Is there one radio talk show host worth millions, NO!

ETC ETC ETC

This republic wasn't founded to enrich a small portion of the population but that is how it is sold to us. The Supreme Court now tells us that corporations have the same rights as individuals do...this is insanity!!!

Why should one American lose his home due to medical bills? Why should Americans lose there jobs and security because of the
inability of bankers and investors to do their jobs? Why should one American die for a war/wars based on lies?

50 years after the culture wars of the 50s/60s/ and 70s we are faced with the same issues we were trying to resolve back then? Does that not strike anyone else as significant.

Truth, democracy, and our best way forward is not found at the extreme ends of the political spectrum. It is coming to terms with divisive issues, finding common ground, and moving forward together...

I can agree with that statement.

Our biggest human problem is greed. Because of greed, we need regulations. Because of greed, neither capitalism nor communism will work perfectly.

And we are all Greedy.

One could say without Greed there would be no ambition. How would you define greed?

Sorry I have to comment, this is a huge pet peeve and I can't help myself.

“Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch. Liberty is a well-armed lamb contesting the vote.” —Ben Franklin

Quote:
I know what you are getting at, we should all vote according to our beliefs, what ever party. And if we feel our rights violated we should let our representatives know with our voice and our vote. But, when ever I hear someone claim that we are a democracy I have to clarify.

Its a common mistake to say we are a democracy. The U.S. is a "constitutional republic". The word "democracy" has been use so loose and out of context that the average person doesn't even know what it really means. We elect by "democratic process" that does not make us a democracy. Democracy is not interchangeable with freedom or rule by the people.

Democracy is a form of government that is simply majoritarianism. Democracies merely grant revocable rights to citizens depending on the whims of the masses, that means all rights go out the window each time someone else takes power. There are no representatives of the people only the majority. The founders’ belief was that democratic government could be as tyrannical as any King.

A constitutional republic exists to secure and protect pre-existing rights. Our founding fathers knew we needed to protect our rights, even from ourselves because as humans we are all imperfect. There are core rights in this country that can't be violated even at the whim of the populace, all though they are trying their best to sneak things in here and there.

Every time someone says "we are a democracy" it is actually harmful because if too many believe a democracy is ok because they think it means freedom and representation or believe we are already "ruled by the masses" then it will be easy to morph us into a real Democracy without anyone even noticing where our constitution is no longer honored and our rights go out the window. A democracy is not a good thing, at least compared to what we have here in America. We will loose the America we know.

from wikipedia:
"A constitutional republic is a state where the head of state and other officials are representatives of the people and must govern according to existing constitutional law that limits the government's power over citizens.

In a constitutional republic, executive, legislative, and judicial powers are separated into distinct branches and the will of the majority of the population is tempered by protections for individual rights so that no individual or group has absolute power.

The fact that a constitution exists that limits the government's power makes the state constitutional. That the head(s) of state and other officials are chosen by election, rather than inheriting their positions, and that their decisions are subject to judicial review makes a state republican.

The United States of America is formed as a Federal Constitutional Presidential Republic."

I'm sorry I have a really hard time with this, you might not have a problem, but are all your poultry tested? If they are not you are putting you 'neighbors' in jeopardy. are you NPIP or WI certified? you can't be NPIP or you would have had an inspector at you house. Buy the way you are talking it sounds like you are saying that the 'big guys' with their tightly packed birds, antibiotics, and monstrous barn is the 'best way to go. Also why can one little group try to take the Muscovy's away from the rest of us because they think its right? with out proper debate and discussion
