I know this should interest many of you. It's summer, it's hot, we want to have more energy, we're tired of carrying that extra weight, it's hard for us to "diet" (quote, unquote) and we want to make a change. Juicing isn't something new, I just got away from it. My joints hurt, my eyesight was fading and my blood pressure was way up. I wasn't eating enough vegetables. I saw friends of mine start juicing and admired them for their energy and vitality. It was time for me to get started. I did my research. I figured out what juicer I wanted. I watched a lot of videos on YouTube and learnecd what I could. We were visiting this one friend who juices and I asked her to get her juicer out and make us some vegetable juice. All too happy to convert someone she did, a pile of carrots, a couple celery sticks, some baby salad greens and an apple. Cut the stuff up about like you would for a vegetable platter and turned her juicer on and proceeded to slowly feed the thing. About five minutes later we each had an 8oz. glass of green juice. It was really tasty and you felt the "buzz" from it right away. Not that fake nasty buzz you get from RedBull or one of those other energy drinks, this is a really clean feeling.

Why not just eat a lot of vegetables, what's the big difference ?? Being your body does not have to break down the vegatable matter to get the nutrients in the extracted juice you feel what it is doing right away. It's very satisfying and stays with you a big part of the day. Some days I juice twice. I eat pretty much what I want for lunch and dinner - juice is my breakfast, I get about 16 oz. of juice. I like carrot, celery, a beet, a peeled orange and maybe some romaine or spinach. Your best results will be with mostly vegetables in your juice, but at first a peeled orange or a cut up apple help sweeten and make the juice more palatable. You get to realize these vegetables have lots of sweet flavor of their own. Our neighbors are growing tomatoes and cucumbers, we juiced one of their cucumbers the other day. WOW !!

I did a LOT of research. You know me I am always preaching (yeah I am) that you should take advantage of all the info on the internet, read reviews on Amazon and retail sites, watch videos on YouTube and then you decide for yourself. But for me (and my friends) the Omega VRT350HD is what I liked and bought. It's not cheap, but I looked around long and hard. What separates the Omega from other juicers ?? Well most juicers use blades and very high RPMs (revolutions per minute) to extract the juice. This high speed and friction actually heats the juice and oxidizes it which strips it of much of it's nutrient values. Not the Omega VRT350HD. It runs very quietly at 80rpm and uses an auger to CRUSH the vegetables to extract the juice. No pulp and very sweet and like I said it just makes you feel great.

The best deal I could find and I looked hard, was to register online with Bed, Bath and Beyond and they email you a 20% off coupon which you PRINT and take to the store in your area (I looked to see mine had them in stock, YES). You cannot just show them the coupon on your mobile device, they need that coupon to turn into corporate. It's a no hassle deal. Instead of it being almost $400.00 it was $308.00 out the door. Smart shopper !! And IF you should have a problem you simply return it there. The VRT350HD comes with a 10 year warranty on the juicer and an 8 year warranty on the auger. Who gives you a 10 year warranty on anything any more ??

Lastly let me talk to you about what it has done for me, besides the extra energy I feel every day. I'm 66 and as many know am going blind from open field glaucoma. It also has helped me with my arthritic joints - part of this improvement is I also quit drinking diet soda. You read any of the articles on how the artificial sweeteners in soda drinks are actually bad for you. How they can cause any number of illnesses ?? If you have kids or drink diet sodas yourself, read those articles. I switched back to Coke and drink it watered down and far less often. So in a month of juicing and no diet soda I stopped taking naproxin for joint pain 3 times a day, and now take it once every three days. Yeah a nice thing. I don't like taking pills. I'm not Superman and seeing thru walls yet but when I went for my last eye appointment last week (3 weeks into juicing) my eye pressure was down to 8 and 9, thats 3 points lower than it had been last visit - he lowest it has ever been. That high eye pressure (in the low 30s) I started with is what was robbing me of my eyesight.

So friends do think about this juicing. If you're into vegetables or want more vegetables in your diet but it's hard to get your daily minimum think about it. I wish you all good health no matter what.

Juicing workbowl with 7 carrots cut up, one beet, 3 celery stalks, some watermelon chunks, 1 peeled orange and 1 apple. Really awesome juiced.

Worlbowl with my usual: 6 or 7 carrots, 2 celery stalks, 1 cut up red bell pepper, 1 peeled navel orange and one pipping apple. YUMMY !!!! The wife takes hers to work in insulated cup with a screw on cap. So good !!

Smoothies are great, probably the best thing to do with fruit is smoothies because you want the fibre from fruit. We got a VitaMix a number of years ago and made smoothies. Actually just a bit before we got the Omega we were making smoothies with some cut up carrots and fruit and a lot of ice. I'd even strain the smoothie to get some of the vegetable pulp out, what we were jonesing for was vegetable juice.

If you have a Facebook account or an iPhone or iPad there are a lot of juicing and smoothie resources to take advantage of. In the case of the Facebook stuff you get interesting recipes posted to your feed a couple times a day. Stuff to inspire you on your journey. It's not easy and when you see some of the photos it gets you interested in making it.

Enjoy. Some smoothies are a very clever way to sneak fruits and vegetables into a kids diet, if ya'll have kids.

This is from about 3 years ago when I first got the Vitamix, I snuck a lot of celery, carrots and beets in our smoothies.

Hey Mike,

Yes, just started juicing myself..being overweight, getting older and my metabolism isn't the same, juicing seems to be doing the trick since I LOVE FOOD!!! There is nothing I DON"T LIKE but I find the juicing curbs my appetite, at least til noon, LOL!!......Plus, the fact that I quit smoking a year and a half ago and have gained some unwanted weight, but doctor says "its better than smoking" but harder to take off for sure....anyway, I know juicing is great for you, but it doesn't replace my cravings for REAL FOOD, especially your DELICIOUS recipies!!! oh well, will contine to juice for the benefits and will indulge once in awhile...I miss your recipies, that's for sure!

For older people with a myriad of health issues it is best to talk to your GP or specialist before going on any radical diet. Juicing for breakfast is a great way to start the day and get a goodly portion of our MDRs of vegetables. I saw my eye specialist 3 weeks after I started juicing, when they tested my eye pressure it was down 3 points to 8 and 9, which is the lowest it's ever been. Lower is good when you have glaucoma, it's the high pressure that robs you of your vision.

Probably a good thing to do is think of it as a lifestyle change. The same way my wife did when she joined Weight Watchers: it was dieting and adding a daily morning walk that helped. In her case, and now in mine, we've cut out the things that we're really bad with. I no longer make the elegant desserts like tiramisu, carrot cake, apricot bars, banana cream pie and so on. Cut that out... I didn't put my weight on overnight and I don't expect to lose it overnight. I want to have more energy and feel better. The weight will come off over time.

Be careful but good luck !!

I started juicing about 3 years ago and I LOVED IT!!! I did a 30 day juicing detox (no solid foods for 30 days) and immediately dropped 30 lbs in 30 days. After that, I would juice every day but slowly incorporated solid foods back into my diet. I stopped juicing and I noticed how crappy I started feeling and am still feeling that way. So, I have gotten out the recipes and dusted off the juicer and will begin again. I will get my list of fruits and veggies together. I hope to start riding my bike and running again. My body and bones are hurting now and I know it's because of what I am eating and what I am NOT eating. I can attest to juicing. It works !!!!

Glad to see this thread.

I have FAT, SICK and NEARLY DEAD arriving via Netflix today...
One of the plus factors for me when I had been juicing about a week was I didn't have a lot of the old ankle and joint pain, I used to take Naproxin twice a day, now I take it maybe once every 3 days. I am hopeful I will be off it in another month.

BUT a big part of what helped beside the juicing was I stopped drinking diet sodas. I said this before in the thread but it bears repeating: there are countless articles online all the time about how nasty diet soda is, how it's almost better to drink regular soda than the stuff with aspartame, Splenda or whatever sugar substitute they use. I still drink soda but a lot less and I water it down by putting a LOT of ice in my insulated drink cup and when it gets low add a lot of filtered water and have really tried to wean myself of the soda addiction. And it IS an addiction.

Best of luck, I know people get busy or run out of veggies or whatever but wow I BET you really feel a difference when you stop juicing, right away. One of my best buddies in California has a lot of health issues and I was talking to him again about juicing and how good it makes me feel. He's got enough medical issues I told him to see his cardiologist and GP first just in case any of the heart meds or blood thinners he's taking would have a bad reaction with juicing. As great as juicing is FOR ME there are issues some people need to talk to their doctors about.

Congrats on getting the the video. I'm glad that I'm not a soda person, so I don't have to deal with those nasty sodas. For the most part, I'm a healthy person. I have not had a cold or anything like that in about 20 years. I don't have any health issues. Just recently I had a bad allergic reaction (Acute Hives) the same as Joe in the video and that has turned my life around. I don't like how the Epi Pen and Benadryl has made me feel. I still feel drowsy and drunk from the meds. That's why I need to detox and get this medication out of my body. I'm getting my recipes together, so that I can have my first veggie juice in the morning. I'm so excited!
