I have been homeless (we lived out of my car) and I have scrubbed floors and toilets to keep my kids with me.
Sympathy is great but reality is... take responsiblity for your choices. I have made some really bad ones in the past but I have managed to pull up my big girl panties and get it together. Have I kicked myself in the ass because of something I should have done preventatively that would have saved me a headache later...definitiely. The saying "an ounce of preventation is worth a pound of cure" is said for a reason.
I can afford insurance and a car because I worked for them. Not because someone else had to cover my part.
ETA: We live to far out for police to be of much of a timely use as well. We buy guns and ammo.

and everyone who can't afford it doesn't work equally hard? There are lazy peopel yes, but there are many out there who are working poor and do the best they can.
I work a social work govt job. I don't make much money either. The only great thing about the job is the insurance. The only reason I took it actually.
When we lived in the car, I couldn't afford insurance on it. I got lucky and we didn't have an accident. OTW I would be paying for their car, my car, and any injuries. Would it be cheaper to have the insurance? Of course. Would I kick myself? Definitely.
People make choices all the time, choosing between the lesser of two evils, for example. Money I can't afford to spend versus a bill I will have the rest of my life due to being sued. We don't eat much meat that we don't shoot ourselves. The air conditioning doesn't get turned on and I am wearing two pairs of socks in my own living room. We all wear hand me downs. I still have to figure out how to pay bills. Insurance is just one of them like the electric. People have to choose and deal with the consequences. Why not rent an apartment in town where all these services are provided and timely?
I'm going to quit now. I just can't sympathize that much with someone that chooses not to protect themself.
Where is the line? Someone mentioned the "social contract". The whole mess with health care - there are a LOT of people in this country for whom health care is spiraling out of reach. I hear WAY too many stories of people being bounced between hospitals (or simply shunted aside) because the victim is uninsured. This case is another face of the same question. What do we as Americans believe to be basic human services to which all should have access? I do not subscribe to the total Social Darwinism thing - there is a line beyond which we do owe something to our fellow humans. Apparently some Conservatives are total Social Darwinists. Yup, that is what it is called -" you are poor because you are stupid and make bad choices, so if you get sick you should die, spare the rest of us the burden and improve the gene pool by getting out". Repugnant? If you read between the lines that is the mantra of modern conservatism.
The firefighters were there observing, to make sure no one got hurt. The community made a decision and protecting property is not part of the free deal.

I understand you point even if I don't fully agree. I find it hard to stop myself nor do I want to from feeling compassion for those, even if their misfortune came about by their own mistake. Whether it be criminal or Nun, my heart would break when something valued to them is lost.
I'm glad I live where I do. If you have a fire, it's responded to, period. I used to be on our dept. it's volunteer too, and I am ashamed of any department that would sit by and watch a home burn for $75. That is absolutely disgusting and they should be sued, and I am not one to push the sue button often. I agree, OP, sick, sick, SICK!
According to the mayor who was also interviewed, this is the second home in this municipality that was allowed to burn while the fire company 'stood guard.'
I also have to agree. I'm sorry but 75 a year for fire service is not that expensive and I'm not the kind of person to normally condones things like this but its not right for people to get away with not covering themselves. It would be nice if the county made it so you could include it in your taxes. My husband is a volunteer firefighter and emt and let me tell you that their dept eats alot of the cost for people who they know cannot afford to pay the bill. The people were to cheap and lazy to do something that would benefit them in the event. You have to grow up at some point and take responsibility for your actions or lack thereof.
