I'm with the "good job firemen" crowd. even though the fee hadn't been paid, they showed up to make sure no people were at risk. If someone had been inside, they would have gone after them.
As for not knowing about the fee, I don't even live in that STATE and I know about it because it was all over national news a year ago when it happened to another home in the area.
To say "oh I didn't know" is the height of irresponsibility of the homeowner. That would be like saying "I didn't know it was illegal to....."
When you move into an area, it's YOUR job to see what fire coverage you have, what fees/taxes there are, what rules governing what you can/can't do on your property. If I buy a piece of property and then find out I can't put a certain type of business on it, is it the zoning boards fault or is it mine for not doing my research.
As for not being able to afford it, there are ways to get around that. There are certain things that you HAVE to afford. Car insurance if you buy a car. Homeowner's insurance if you own a home.
Let me know how much sympathy that you feel if you get plowed by an uninsured driver and now all the repairs are coming out of your own pocket. I'm sure that they couldn't afford the insurance either and that's way more than $75 a year. Shoot, I pay extra for "uninsured motorist" coverage, just in case I get in an accident with someone who doesn't have insurance. Yeah, it's an additional fee, but I'm glad to pay it because I can't afford to pay for someone else's lack of judgement.
In different articles, the people have said/insinuated that they knew about the fee, but chose not to pay it because they didn't think that they would have a fire. Well, they gambled and lost.
