this years edible addition to the farm

If camels taste the way they smell......NO! lol. Australia has plenty of extra rabbits too though, have someone over there send you a variety pack of extra camels and rabbits.

[[[.....do camels taste good?....]]]]

I've eaten llama, which is in the camel family, and the meat is nasty. It tastes like a camel smells. I can't imagine camel tastes any better. My dogs ate it, but they will eat road kill.

As for raising meat, what do you like to eat? 5 acres of what? Pasture? Sagebrush? Pine trees?

Pigs have a very good feed conversion ratio. I've raised hogs with 50% of the diet consisting of windfall apples--- if you happen to have a fruit orchard on those 5 acres.

If you've got irrigated pasture, then cattle are easy. You can also raise geese on pasture. Grass is their preferred food. It takes several months to put one on the table, but if you've got pasture, you've fed the geese for free.

The kind of fence you've got, or can afford to put in, affects what you raise. It takes a very tight fence to keep goats confined. It takes a very secure fence to keep coyotes out of your poultry.

1 acre will not grow enough to make it worth your while for feed plus the cost of the harvest and storage. Not very cost effective!!!! Your surely wouldn't have enough room for a cow if you break up the acreage.

Rabbits are very easy to care for, they dont need alot of space, dont eat a great deal not to mention their feed is pretty cheap. Also manure for the garden! And they are good eatin

I second this one... As soon as my coop is done I'm having hubby build me a set of hutches on the outside for some rabbits actually.. I couldnt beleive he agreed .. rabbit poop actually doesnt need composted it can be directly added ... also if you want to let a few rabbits in with your chickens its good the chicksn actually eat the rabbit poop cause the rabbits dont digest their food fully ....

If you do go with rabbits make sure you do your homework and go with those that are intended for meat...Get stories guide to raising rabbits. Also keep them on wire to prevent parasites. I currently have a small herd of rabbits, raising the meat for my raw fed dogs. I've found their feed to be only slightly less $$ than the chick starter I get for my chicks.
