What was the ratio of pullets vs. roosters that you ended up with? I'm so afraid that all 6 of mine will end up being roosters. Wondering now if I should have gotten more "just in case".

Typically one would expect the ratio to be about 50% but one of my employees brother bought 18 straight run birds last year and got all roosters. His coop is only large enough for the 18 birds, and to compound the situation, since there is a chance they might be killed, his wife will not let him get rid of them.

The guy at my TSC said that they mix the surplus males with the straight run... making it around 75% males..

Ooh, I am going to be optimistic and hope this wasn't the case at my TSC. :>(

My very first chicks were straight run and 8 out of 12 ended up being cockerels. I vowed then that I would NEVER purchase straight run again!

Honestly, I think they (the hatcheries) sex all of their chicks because it is easier to do it that way and then throw 80% of their cockerels into the straight run groups and add 20% pullets. I could be way off base, but it seems to be that way.

A friend of mine last year bought st run from the store (not TSC but similiar), got 25 chicks, all are males. Another two friends bought six chicks a piece, all were males. So far this year, none of my friends picked any chicks out of the st run bins, just the pullets only bin.

Last week I went to Rural king and took a look at the st run bins, it was that obvious, I mean OBVIOUS, that 95% of the chicks in there were males! Their combs were larger and pinker than the females and they were sitting there for two weeks. A young family came into that bin because it was only 50 cent a piece, picked all male chicks for their new chicken project. I asked them if they are looking for meat birds and they said no, they wanted pullets. I told them those six chicks they got were all males and do not buy them from st run bins. They put the chicks back in the bin and got the other chicks from the pullet only bins. I know they have to pay a little more for them but save the aggravation of getting ALL males and be happy with all girls. Hee hee! I did my job LOL!

Well, my first batch is 9 out of 10 male...I think.

Hoping the second batch of chicks (6) has more pullets.

I will never buy from a "bin" again.

I did purchase 4 pullets from MPC , within 2 days, 2 out of the 4 died.

So out of 24 chicks, I know that 3 are pullets. Hoping another 6 will be too!

We got 26 Barred Rocks straight run, Wednesday. We are going to attempt to sex them today. It doesn't matter to us about the ratio as long as we have got some layers (half dozen or so) We'll be putting the extra roos in the freezer come fall and keep the pullets for eggs. Rosie & Roger
