It's simple, if they had nowhere to send their castoffs, they'd lose money.
I never said that and you read what they say nothing (the first post's quote contains what came for AQHA) about the not being able to take your horse anywhere possiblity that got me to post this thread and if you read on you may realize I dropped that part when calm and clear explanations where put forth

I'm stating it now and asking you a question. Because if horse slaughter for human consuption is banned then there are people (who are struggling to feed themselves) that will loose a cheaper food sorce.

2) because it is trying to end horse slaughter (as stated in the proposal) and that is something I'm for as long as done humanly. There are still cultures in our states that eat horse meat because it's what they can get ahold of or because they like it.

I did want to post that while I take this serously that I belive it's great that others have different oppinions. The world would be dull if we all thought and acted the same. I also like the fact I live in a nation that is mostly free but I'm watching them remove my freedoms bit by bit.

I think you would have to be crazy to raise horses for food-horses need more feed per pound than other animals.
I also find that most people don't know where Premarin comes from: pregnant mares urine. First you have to keep her pregnant, then stand her in a stall to collect the urine, not sure if they get to go out and play. AND could you wonder what happens to all those babies?

Most breeding farms keep the mare pregnant and wild horse stay pregnant most of thier lives as well. The ones that are bred in captivity get vet care and carefull feedings.
The is a time frame when the mares are in the stalls and their are regulations that say they get X amout of exersize a day. And the mares spend months running around on acres of land raising thier young and getting rebred to the herds stallion. They only collect the urine during a certian span of the pregnancy.
Some woman can't take the synthetic hormon replacement and without Premerin have major physical and mental break downs.

A Premarin debate probably belongs under another topic given that this topic alone is already 4 pages long.
This is not an "oh my gosh everyone get their guns & shovels & storm DC" proposal. It does have practical applications in respect to protecting horses from inhumane treatment. It does not hamper normal trafficing of horses to the vet, to and from normal activites providing the horse was humanly handled at that activity.

Ok..... I guess I need to get a few cents worth into this thread.
Ending "the slaughter of horses for human consumption" does not put an end to the slaughter of horses -- the dog food industry will still buy unwanted horses from anyone who doesn't mind getting a very low price. Believe me, the race trainers and others who work young horses too hard will never be wondering what to do with the dead lame animals they have on hand. Stock trailers can hold a lot of horses for that final road trip.
Anyone who can get free horse meat to fill their freezer can probably also get free deer/elk/rabbit/whatever, there are plenty of sources of meat that can be hunted legally. The loss of horse meat shouldn't be enough to send anyone into involuntary vegetarianism.
