I've done it like that as well, but occasionally we get a really stubborn case and some toes will curl inside the tape. If that happens we make a shoe like this and tape the toes individually, It acts as a splint and keeps them straight. Mindy

High protein causes leg issues. Curled toes are from the chick not getting out of the egg quick enough. Before the chick pips the egg all it's bones a soft. This allows them to move inside the egg and position themselves for hatching. The chick pips the egg and air goes into the shell, the chick breathes air and the bones begin to harden. If the humidity is low the chick will have a hard time getting out of the egg because all the moisture coming out of the egg is drying on the shell making it that much harder for the chick to break the egg shell. So he tries pushing with it's legs thus the curly toes and sometimes where the toes all meet (I cannot think of the name of it so call it the ankle LOL) ends up bent as well. I have never had an success with straightening out the "ankle" part. I think it has something to do with the tendons not in place. Protein had nothing to do with your chicks death. Was it alone when and after it hatched? Was it eating and drinking? I always count the days for my peafowl eggs to hatch and then place a chicken egg into the incubator to hatch around the same time. That chicken chick will teach your pea chick how to eat and drink. If all you had was the one chick and you did not teach it to eat and drink then that is why it did not survive unfortunately. But curled toes cannot kill a chick and alot of times if the toes are left alone they normally straighten out on their own in a couple days. If not straight by 3 days then I tape the toes or give them boots to wear for about 5 days. I feed my chicks medicated chick starter crumbles so it helps them battle coccidia. I do not feed mine medicated turkey starter crumbles cause I (knock on wood) do not have a blackhead problem as this feed helps the chicks battle blackhead disease. Some people add trreats to feed the chicks but I only give them mixed veggies when they are older. I have not seen any of my peafowl go after bugs, but the chickens do LOL I move the logs inside the pen and the peas just look at the earthworms but never ate one, then a chicken runs over and eats it. The peas look at the chicken like "that's gross"

I had one die at a week he or she walked on his first joint I got him that way I don't know if he was hurt during shipment then another one died for no apparent reason that let me with six which are alive and doing well and BIG! I feed them from when I first got them game bird crumbies starter-grower 28% protein.

She was all alone. The only one out of the 5 eggs. She was eating and drinking. I know how to hatch eggs and my incubator may not have a humidity gauge or what ever but I've hatched birds from many species. My aunt figured lack of protein because she's seen the same thing with chickens, ducks, geese, emus, ostriches, rheas, and pheasants and it was the same cause for the feet, lack of protein. I don't plan on buying a humidity gauge. If you help a chick out to early they bleed out through the umbilicus cord, and to late they might die inside the egg. Can't take the chick out of the egg. Once the chick has started and there hasn't been any progress for like 8 hours then you can chip a few shells away. The chick has to push itself out. Thor and Calypso I've watched drown mice in their water bowl and then leave them.

If your chick was eating and drinking enough *and* you were feeding it chick, turkey or gamebird starter, it most likely died from an infection like e. Coli, ask your Aunt about that. But if you were feeding it a crumble with too much calcium it could have died from visceral gout. The curly toe was most likely due to your humidity being off, genetics, the diet the parents were on or a combo of all. Ask you Aunt about that, too.

This thread grew 8 pages in 24 hrs. Must be cause it's wintertine ad we're all housebound? Anyway,outta boredom I read thru this entire novel again,and this is what I came up with. Post number #8-Dany12, #12,Zaz, #14,New2, #15,Casportpony, #18, New2, #19,Zaz, #21, AugeredIN #23, Arbor, #28,country_girl011,#71,Roseheart16,#101,Zaz, #115,Arbor, #126,3BirdGirlz,#157, Blue Creek Farm,#349,Connerhills, #400,FBC,#498,Minxfox, #629,Dylansmom and last but no way least,post#659,Yoda,,all says thor is a Thora,About 20 people here say you've got a Thorette,Thora,Thorina,Thorleigh,ect.

But while reading thru all this,I want to direct you back to your post made at number #668,,and I quote "I can sex IB peachicks easily at day1" Really?? Surely you jest? Put me down for $100 on that one please? And I'm really confused here about the title of the thread "Those who need help sexing peafowl" as in who? Yourself or members of this forum? Time for a Merlot Hatch-a-Long,,anyone care to join??

The name was so because I would go from post to post to post and people would ask hey what sex is my peachick so I made this thread for those that needed help sexing their peafowl. The reason why I used that photo is because that photo shows the difference in primary feather color which is a big sexing method that I'm sure just about everybody has found useful. When Jadea started laying first it was just laying hen feed so 16% protein and cracked corn. My aunt just told me that the toes were messed up because of the lack of protein. She saw that the feet were cut open from walking on her toes so my aunt believed that in doing so that she could have got an infection and since I didn't realize it nor no how to treat it she died. After she layed the first egg then I started using dog food and medicated chick feed. I didn't use the medicated game bird feed until I bought Thor and Calypso.

So you were feeding the peachick laying crumbles and scratch? If so, that's what killed your chick, IMO. Look up visceral gout, then look up calcium requirements for chicks.
