So is breeding season determined by you? Breeding season is in the spring, when the hens lay... My dominant spalding is always fanning. Yeah and the peacock I was referring to that killed two hens is a spalding, who has to be in a bull pen and released occasionally to the hens for fertile eggs.

Quills are there just no actual feathers have came all the way out

Just letting you know, hens do have feathers in the region where the train is on a peacock. Also, Thor is a hen, so she is not going to grow a train, and if she was a he, then it would take at least a year at the quickest for "him" to grow a train.

It isn't breeding season just yet. The true breeding season isn't until winter is over and it warms up and it normally starts when the males start making their loud calls again. It is probably still breeding season in Australia though. I hope they are having a good one especially with those beautiful reverse pieds!

I actually heard one of mine do the mating sound and I saw P-Dawg mount a turkey, this was just a couple of days ago. Plus, my oldest alpha male is giving me the evil eye again. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it's mating season, but they are starting to make the change here.

I know males will fan at any age. Calypso isn't able to breed so there is no hen around except the big male's hen and he's not old enough to breed either. Do you know why a yearling male will fan?

I agree, Thor is a hen and I think she needs a new name! How about Thora or Thorlita?

I think Thorina.

Yearling males fan for practice and just because it is what they do. They have to attract a mate, although no peahen really likes the look of a yearling male unless that is the only option. Yearling male's moms will even make them stop displaying. Yearling males display when they see the adult male display, they will start displaying for their mom, a squirrel, etc. It is probably pretty fun and just practice just like how wolf puppies stalk each other, yes it is play, but also it helps them for when they are an adult and need to know how to stalk for hunting.

I understand that you really like Thor and probably want Thor to be a peacock, but peahens can be fun too and very sweet.

They just do, and both males and female will do it from a very young age, although I think the males do it much more often.
