Thoughts on Universal healthcare

I just read this whole thread, and something just occurred to me... I also read this thread when it was current https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=139169&p=1 and who started both threads? Well, not members of countries with universal health care. Now I have my doubts that it would work, but I'm not going to dismiss it, either. Especially because I'm pretty much uninsured. I have some coverage for emergencies, which is good, but not for prescriptions or doctors visits. And no, I can't get aid. I have no kids, am not a "full time" student, my employer certainly doesn't provide it, and I make too much to qualify for anything else. And I make so little it's sad. My car is over ten years old. The only reason I have internet is because when I called to cancel it they offered me an extremely discounted rate. I live on coupons, discounts, and hope. BUT, I do pay for some insurance, so I'm not what I would consider a "free loader."

It's not black and white, or we wouldn't have this thread. There are problems with both systems. I don't see any end in sight and just hope to finish school and find a job which offers coverage.

If you have government run healthcare they will decide what treatment you receive, how long you have to wait to receive it and what doctor can treat you.

I live in Ontario and we have government run health care...

my doctor and I decide my course of treatment not the government
and the waiting part depends on what i need done...something that is a life threatening illness like cancer my mom waited 4 days
my son waited 18 days for a podiatrist
I waited 9 says for a dermatologist

so those wait times are not outrageous...

and I choose who my family doctor will be and when a doc has to refer me to a specialist he gives me the names of the ones in my area and asks me who I want to go to. if i want to go to one he has not listed as long as I have the Name and address of the doc he will make the referral out and call the doc and set things up.

there is a common misunderstanding that we have no control with our health care or the wait times are way to long. In every situation I have come across with my family this has not been the case

My dad is a diabetic
my son has mental health issues
My DH has a heart condition and my 2nd son does too

I also said I don't know if Universal Health care would work or not, but that the current system does not work.

i hear you, but i'm not sure that this is the norm....i have asked others and they said the wait times were crazy long..etc...so..maybe your area is better for these things??

How is that different then what insured people get now?

Most plans you have to call a doctor, see if they'll even accept it. If they do and you need a specialist then you have to wait to get in to that doctor. Rarely do they take you the same day, there's a wait on everything and that is in the US.

I think it's not fair to say how bad universal health care is unless you've used it. And if you read my post on page 9, I have.

I have read several threads about universal health care, and what really stands out to me is that no one is listening to the people who know first hand how it work. There have been more than a couple people post from the UK and Canada about how thier system works. I don't seem to remember any of them telling horrid stories about government control, lack of adequate care, not being able to choose thier desinty ect....It seems we would rather listen to propiganda which may or may not be true.
