In the Brooder
Hi there, long time follower of the forum and first time posting. I have been searching and searching for similar situations to what's going on with our chicks but seem to be getting all kinds of results. Some background, we have 2 older hens that are around 5 years old and aren't displaying any signs of illness. We then got a first round of 6 chicks from a local breeder in March. We lost 4 out of the 6 to a bear attack unfortunately, but the 2 that are left have not showed any signs of illness. We then got another batch of 10 chicks 4 weeks later from another local hatchery that seem to be having all of the issues. None of them have been vaccinated unfortunately, and I now realize the mistake of getting from 2 different sources for chicks, as well as them not being vaccinated.
I currently have two 12-week old chicks (the younger ones) that are not looking good. We have already lost 3 others due to similar symptoms. It usually starts with lethargy and eyes squinting. The others that already passed fluffed up really big and bloody stool was spotted, so I started everyone on an outbreak treatment dosage (2 tsp/gal) of liquid corrid for 7 days suspecting it might be coccidiosis. We still lost the 3 during the treatment and it was very sudden once symptoms started but for the others the bloody stool went away and things seemed fine. I gave them a round of poultry cell to help with vitamins and then another maintenance round of corrid (0.5tsp/gal) that they just finished yesterday. We had one start showing the same signs as before (eyes squinting and lethargic), but this chick also started having problems walking and is now completely unable to walk. I started looking into these other symptoms and questioned if maybe it's marek's instead. Then this morning I came across another of the younger chicks that was just standing still and didn't seem to want to come outside and stood wide-eyed next to the water without moving much, so I knew something was off with this one as well. I currently have the 2 sick chicks quarantined, but I realize if it is Marek's then it's already too late. I recently learned about necropsy and wish I had known about it sooner so that I could have had the others sent to the lab to know for sure what is going on. If the one passes, I will have a necropsy done but it can take up to 20 weeks to get results...so I'm trying to troubleshoot now if possible.
The only other suspicion I have is that they were exposed to mold when they first came outside and I worry it may be aspergillosis. None of the birds that have passed have shown signs of troubled breathing other than the one that can't walk currently. I'm at such a loss, I've never experienced this much of a mess with chickens and have raised many before without issues.
If any more info is needed, I'm happy to give it.
Thanks so much in advance.
