Thread formerly known as Hatch day is today

Does the new boy have a name yet QJ? I think that's another reason I like my ducks. If you just throw a new chicken in your chicken flock you'll have all sorts of problems. Ducks take about an hour and then they act as if they've been together forever.

Awwww QJ. I worry that my geese will do that to their new additions. They will be taking to the air while the youngsters are flapping their wings, running after them, but not able to fly.

good morning everyone

My boy tries to fly occasionally, but just to me when he see's me coming with the food bucket. He can get about 6 inches off the ground, and fly for about 4 feet, lol. My ancona has never trued that I know of. My khaki girl did once, and fell flat on her face. I was right there and saw it, and I think she was embarrassed because she never tried again. Maybe I should keep some big ducks around my calls. That way they'll be less likely to fly off if they are out of their pen, since part of their flock is fat and grounded.

The hawk is here! I heard the crows!

They've been awful this year haven't they? I think the nice weather has meant that we have bunches that stopped on their way south and haven't gone anywhere. I've seen one or two occasionally before, but this winter they are pretty much a daily sight. My poor birds have been locked in their yard most of the time since the one got my khaki. I'm afraid to put the babies out until they stop peeping. There were 2 closing in when I took them outside for like 10 minutes yesterday. Think their loud mouths bring them in.

Isn't it nice to have crows to sound the warning? they do it here too. I love your new duck QJ he is very handsome.. Congrats!

We don't have any crows. I wanted to put up crow houses or something but then everyone said they'd eat my eggs. We do have a pair of loud mouth blue jays which do just as good though. Over the summer I was feeding my girls treats and a hawk swooped down at us and was chased away by a whole bunch of robins. I'd never heard of robins chasing hawks, but I was glad they did. We have tons of nests in out yard, I think they were protecting their babies.
