Catching up here, from what I have heard, that is NOT the case. Newly hatched ducklings/chicks/gooslings are much more relaxed and easier to get a peek at. When they are older, they have more muscle tone and you won't see as well. However, I am not expert, just what I have read.

Hatch date is a week from today, dec14. Hard for hubby not to know I have the eggs. At first we had it in my closet but I couldn't reach it after surgery. So then we moved it to the bathroom. The only place in there is right in front if the window. I could not get my tempts to settle out. One time 101 than plummet to 96. Then it went to 104 one time .. I thought OMG I fried my eggs but they were ok. Well hubby came up with a plan. Put the incubator where the temps can be watched closer......put it beside my side of the bed. I thought WOW in our bedeoom. I was shocked.

LOL, everyone's gone to sleep...

Anyhow, DG is right about the colours, SM. Assuming that your Cayuga has two black genes you will get all black ducklings out of the Buff hen and a mix of black and blue (most Bibbed) out of the blue Swedish hen.

Black dominates everything except blue and brown dilution.

Black plus one dose of blue equals blue
Black plus two doses of blue equals silver or splash
Black plus one dose of brown in females and two in males equals chocolate
Black plus one dose of blue and one dose of brown in females and two of brown in males equals lilac
Black plus two doses of blue and one dose of brown in females and two of brown in males equals lavender

OKAY and how do you know the doses of each color in the duck

Hmm... I have never read that but from personal experience its easier later because you can see more and get a better look becuase they are bigger. I usually have a second person helping me holding the duckling upside down faceing them and that way i can look without them moving so much.

Hey there FeatherFinder. Nice to meet you. I am the original poster to this thread. I was hatching my very first batch and didn't know what to do. I am on my third batch and stil don't know what I am doing

I am better at it though at least I think I am, we'll see next week when babies are suppose to pop their little head out of those eggs. I think I have an egg with twins so I am sure I will be here praying for help.

Anywho.... nice to meet you FeatherFinder.
