ok guys! finally caught up........... going on 3 hours of reading later
ep.gif
! good thing the kiddos went to bed early tonight
here Bakin...

thanks!
Squatting is what female birds do so the male can get on, lol. They put their head down, lift wings and tail, and squat down. I've never had anything besides a chicken do it to me, and even my chickens don't until they are within a month of laying. Still pretty shocked my 3 month old goose did it. She's growing up too fast, lol.
Nice pen! Beautiful birds too! I didn't see the pictures last night for some reason on here, but see them in everyone else's quotes.
love.gif
ok thanks! i have never seen any of mine do that most of them run away from the boys

Hello everyone! I have been off the forum for a couple of weeks. I recently purchased some Polish, bantam chicks. They are straight run. They are about three and half weeks old. Can anyone tell, by this picture, if they are male and female? The one on the left, Beldar, has a slightly, slanted crest. Primat, on the right, has a rounder crest. I was wondering if this could be indicating a male and female? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated

very cute!

Intro -- Just a homeschooling Mommy with a bator with 16 different kinds of duck eggs in it. We hated last year with this farm and like last year we hatch, care for ducklings a few weeks, and then return them to the farm we received them from to live out their lives.

Yesterday was day 23 in the bator and 3 of the eggs clearly have active duck beaks in the air sacks. Does this mean they might some sooner than day 28? I ask because this year we used an egg turner and I believe about three days before day 28 we are supposed to take them out of the turner and leave them be so they can tumble into the best position for them to hatch. Would you do this sooner given the three active ones?

Thank you in advance for any advice.

I did not think I would be on egg watch so soon. It is a bit like the end of pregnancy. You know in theory you should have patience and such but as the time gets closer the more bumpy roads you find that you choose to drive down a few times and the more spicy meals you brave. LOL So like last time we will vow to keep the bator closed and no helping ducklings along. Last year we did not help any but we did open it often to check on them, take photos and such.
good luck

Hi all, here are some gosling pics a took today when I had the babies out eating grass and grit

7 babies bear their basket

7 gosling snacking

Here is one of the buff dewlaps with the lone gray dewlap

OK, anyone with experience here? This one buff has issues with an eye. It has a bit of clear liquid, and is a bit swollen. I rinsed it with mild salt water today, and it opened for a little while, but im not sure whats going on here. Any thoughts?

gig.gif

I need to get photos of the whole crazy flock tomorrow. My pekin "babies" have finally gotten over the "wait for mama at the door so she'll pick you up and put you to bed" phase and have graduated into the "Get away! Monster!" phase.

The goslings are still sweet and tame enough to be petted and picked up. They wait outside until everyone else goes to bed and then go into the duck house. They're going to need their own place eventually. Bully gosling is now the friendliest of the two.
hu.gif

Someone wants to make a nest back behind the duck house. Not sure who it is, but we've been fishing eggs out of there for the past two days. Maybe I should drag the "broody box" out of the bushes and see what happens. One of the previous owners kept chickens and we finally figured out what that odd house-like thing was. Not a doghouse, a broody box.

My son must have fallen asleep on the couch, I see green jammie legs and blue socks sticking out from under that blanket.

Heard a rumor that hubby bought me some white runner eggs. White runners can throw any color, right? I thought there were recessive genes at play there, but I'm not really good with color genetics.

Now we have one runner mama with 13 ducklings and one muscovy mama with 13 ducklings at the farm. Everywhere you look, there's ducklings. Muscovies are going to a new home eventually, but I think we're going to keep the runner fluffballs... they free range, so I doubt we'll have 13 a few weeks from now...

Now I read somewhere (probably here) that ducks poop about every six minutes. That's 10 times an hour, which is 240 times a day. Multiply by how many ducklings in brooder...

Duck math cannot save you from duck poop math!

gig.gif
hubby reminds me of poop math all the time! he will not be getting this bit of info!

Marcel is a ham....always posing! She is queen of the babies...well, she thinks she is!

Simon could care less about anything...easy going as they come.

Marceau and Simone are tiny compared to the other two.

Marcel is making sure everyone is in their respective corners.

Son's blue Runner babies. They are getting lots of feathers now. His drake, Indy, loves to get into our laps for luvins.

I just love blue ducks!

Hey guys, for those of you who do not follow the goose thread, I wanted to share a short video of Spirit, my gimpy goose, doing her thing.

love the progress! she is so cute and talkative!
I thought I'd post an update to my horse's injury. The gash has pretty much sealed up, and the skin edges are coming together nicely. I'm thinking another week, and I'll be able to start leaving it unwrapped and doctor it that way. Now the question is what sort of damage was done to the cartilage, and such, deep down in the foot, and will he be sound or permanently lame. I'll be glad to be done with wrapping!

hi everyone! caught back up again.

i am loving the scovies more every time i see them!
One of the turkeys just strutted. Most adorable thing ever

love.gif

I'm up to 10 of these babies now. 6 more in the incubator, 5 more just put under a broody yesterday. I'm keeping most of them to grow out and keep my favorites. I want a smooth feathered one or 2, a few more silkies, and if my roo doesn't change his attitude I'll be finding him a new home this fall and keeping a replacement fizzle out of the batch. I love the black frizzle silkie in the back, but can't keep any frizzles for breeding since my roo is frizzled.
so cute! i will have to upload a pick of my lone one so you can tell me what you think, not even sure on color but it sure is cute
love.gif
and feisty!
I've got the feather kids all outside playing right now. Pictures to come.

Looks like our warm spell is winding down some. Guess it would be a good day to go toss that clover seed and get a few things transplanted. Hubby's supposed to be repairing out riding mowers. One somehow got dirt in the gas lines last year when we were redoing our front yard. He thinks our son did it. The other one has a faulty battery. At least the hauler mower is an easy fix, the mower mower might take a little more time.

Got 11 pips out of 16 eggs.

I am back and speaking of Anconas....

I took a couple quick shots today and played around with them. They aren't uber good pics but figured I would share.

My two black meat birds are growing up. My hatchery Swedish and Cayuga. They are both starting to feather in and I see LOTS of green!

I didn't get any of the tricolor babies today but plan on getting some new pics of them soon.

So I have 12 of 16 pipped. Threw one out, dead, fluid in air cell. One really active one that hasn't pipped yet. Two more that I'm not seeing anything in, but will keep them in for now.

Aiming for 13 of 16 total. Nice. That will be a new record. Got one wrong way but really active. No SW yet.

Hubby and I were having a duck vs. goose battle on Facebook. All because I pointed out that the picture with the ducky caption was really a goose. So...

My girls. The little black one is my family's favorite chicken. She finally started laying again after raising the EE babies and I have 5 of her eggs under a silkie. Can't wait to have some of her babies.

Geese checking out the babies. They like to talk to them, but try to bite the gosling so it'll be awhile before they are allowed to meet again without the wire. My little snowy guy loves me, is always underfeet and next to me. The magpies are sort of in the middle personality wise, the snowy girl is the most timid.

Babies. They all play together and get along great.
so pretty!

So excited!!!! Went to check on Call eggs under broody...should be hatching today. One egg was externally pipped, but all should have been because they were all internally pipped yesterday morning. I grabbed the eggs and brought them in, candled and sure enough all were internally pipped and wanting out. I opened them one at a time and made sure nares were clear. They were all very vocal as I opened them up. SW was starting so I"m glad I grabbed them. Of the 6, 5 are alive and well so far. 3 of them are butterscotch!!!!!
celebrate.gif
I've wanted butter babies sooooo bad!!! I have one butter egg in the bator trying to internally pip and on day 24.
3 of 7 silkie eggs in hatcher are externally pipped...woohoo!
I"M SO FREAKING EXCITED!!!!!!
bun.gif

Ok...heads free on 4 of the 5...gonna let them do the rest. #5 is a bit behind in the process, so covered with wet paper towel to wait till later on it. This freakin ROCKS!!!
celebrate.gif
celebrate.gif

Finally caught him on camera strutting! He really gets into it now, turns his neck bright red and everything. No strutting from the other 2 whatsoever, so I'm really hoping I have a trio.

And my geese glow!
lau.gif
love it!!!!!! i sooooooooo need turkeys
love.gif

blue mixes. The closest looking variety I can find is Lilac turkeys, which I'm really hoping mine grow up to look like. They looked identical to lilac poults when they hatched, and seem to be feathering in pretty similar.
droolin.gif
so pretty!
love.gif
so neat and orderly! my hatcher looked like a crime scene!!!
Well...turkeys don't make the muddy mess that ducks do, and scovy's can fly so penning them is more difficult. Would the turkeys fly up out of a cattle panel pen? And are they very tame? I hate getting attacked checking eggs! I've never done turkeys..... I did have a wild tom court my chickens one year. For a week he hung out with them, called at them, and strutted for them. They just ignored the poor guy. He finally gave up his Casanova antics and moved on. It was cool because I could call to him and he'd respond.
so cool! my guys show off all the time and the only attention they get is from my daughter
gig.gif
she is 2 and always tries to hug them
My ganders and their african flock have discovered the babies in the garage and were so very excited. My babies, on the other hand, were scared out of their mind. I had to close the garage door to get them to calm down. And now my african flock are sleeping in my driveway. Ruh roh.
hide.gif

That really sucks....hope they get to you alright.
fl.gif

See...guineas attack like roosters do when they are broody. I don't know about a big ole turkey attacking me, lol. Maybe midgets?
hide.gif
I have pens, then the rest is all open so if they won't stay in pens, I'll probably lose them. It's so open that the cattle and my horse can rub on the pens, lol. I have moving lawn ornaments, both feathered and hairy
celebrate.gif

That sounds like lots of fun!
i do too!
I can't stay for long because I have a Banquet to go to. But Demon guinea is gone
woot.gif
. Only took about 2 minutes to catch him.
celebrate.gif

Do you candle them? I know that a lot of people have issues candling but I can always see into mine to some extent by day 6. Do they have wonky aircells? I honestly don't know what I would be doing differently. I only candle twice. Day 6 or 7 and lock down. 99.5 degrees throughout and humidity from 40 to 60. Do you have a good fertility rate? I had 1 roo to 6 hens before and was had a 85-90% fertility rate and near 100% hatch rate. Of course i have lost a couple but they have been italians. I have to take the lethal gene in to consideration with them. I have NEVER had to pip for them either. Have you?

Just sold 2 Ancona ducklings for $25 bucks today. Woot Woot!
yippiechickie.gif
woot.gif

It would help if I actually listed any of my extra drakes on the local online site.
idunno.gif

Not sure either, because they get along just fence sharing a fence in their garage pens. Ah well. As soon as my other dewlaps get old enough, I will be putting Barley with them and not the other geese anyway, so I will just fence off a 2nd turnout area and give up trying to use the one yard for both sets.

SORRY INCOMING RANT OF THE DAY!!!!!!
ok so today was a crap day all around!!!!!!!!!!! the only redeeming factor was i got to see my bestie for a couple hours and didn't have to cook dinner!

and to top off this horrible day i went to put away the chicks and my son (5) had found a steak knife and cut the plastic in a few places on my green house!
somad.gif
you know my brand new one we spent hours on and just finished like 2 weeks ago, yea that one
rant.gif
and he popped his sisters ball she got for her birthday! and this was after we had just gotten back from playing, and i bought him a ice cream cone and rented him a movie! WTH
he.gif

so i sent him to bed early without his movie, took away his favorite tent, and told him i was taking money from his account to buy his sister a new ball and new plastic for my green house!

do you think i was to harsh? i am just so confused by his behavior lately
