Thread formerly known as Hatch day is today

7-10 days wrap with not taking it off.

Baby is good and driving is all crazy. He helped me feed the baby rabbits born this week during all of the chaos. 16 total and he is fascinated by them and that they get a bottle of milk.

If its a gander you will grow it out. Not every goose is worth breeding, so having a choice is nice.

Hubby is better tonight, but not good. It's been months of battles, and years of pain all coming to a head.

Thanks for the well wishes.

oh Celtic, I really hope it all gets itself worked out really soon. Offer my warm wishes please.

Thanks, guys! I know this is a blip in the long life she will have and all will be well eventually, but it is hard to not be upset. At least she looks very relaxed in her separate pen, sandwiched between the grey dewlaps and the new buff babies. I've been trying to leave her alone today and let her recover. Then we get to do our first treatment with her in the morning. I'm so NOT looking forward to it! Carole, of course, feels terrible and has offered to send me a buff baby that she is hoping will hatch within the next week at her cost.

I just had a lovely family leave here with 4 ducks and 2 geese (my young african girl with a chunky male toulouse). Tomorrow we will put Chicory (Erin toulouse/Barley buddy) in with our remaining toulouse pair and then try to merge the two healthy buff babies with Barley and the ducks, and a pair of the grey dewlaps with the injured buff girl. I really hope they all accept the changes to their groups.

Marty, I found I had to make sure wing was tucked under, then wrapped tight to the body, to get the angel wing fixed on the drake I had that got it. Hope your sebbie baby hatches out healthy!! Can't wait for pics!!

Celtic, very sorry that things are not looking better yet for your family.

I haven't been on here in awhile, though. This week I found out my Pointer has cancer - hemangiosarcoma. I am devasted. This dog has been with me through thick and thin for over 12 years. He has been both the best and the worst dog EVER! He makes the infamous Marley look like an angel, but his charming personality makes up for all the chaos he leaves in his wake. I am having a hard time imagining my life without him in it. I lost my Lab less than a year ago to cancer, too. This is the hardest part of having pets.

I am so sorry to hear about your puppy dog. Cancer is the worst....

We have returned from picking up our buff girl after surgery.

Diagnosis: abscess from an old bite wound that got infected. According to the vet, it is possible that it was not obvious before shipping and the stress of the trip caused it to balloon, but I'm frustrated. She must have been hurting pretty bad during travel from Cali to Utah, only to get picked up from the post office, then taken straight to a vet clinic for surgery to her face. We won't even get into what it cost to treat her.

Treatment: They lanced her face and drained the pus, which should make her feel better almost immediately.. Her post-op care is a bit intense, as we have to stick topical into lanced opening twice a day for the next week, which causes it to bleed, and is not at all pleasant for her. Then, the vet wants to see her next Friday.

Prognosis: 100% recovery.

Poor baby. She is lucky to have you and your amazing vet. Yay for the prognosis!

Sigh they can't even nice to other chicken people.

I love your jabber jaws!

Hope they find the source and she does ok with post op.
Hubby isn't well at all. Spent half of yesterday with doctors. Looks like it will be just me and boys here very soon. He has to be seen by specialists we just don't have here. I can't even travel with him since the kids don't have anyone else to stay with them. So will be hoping the transfer to a new hospital will bring answers and maybe a fix. Answers is all we are hopeful for. Talking major neurological disorders now among other things.
So we are rushing to get as much done as we can while he is here. Our almost 14 year old is very handy, can run a fence and build a pen as well as hubby and I can. He also knows the turn out system and feeding system so is a huge help both with the animals and his little brother too.
Looking for someone local right now who can help with some of the goose and duck house building we need to finish. I hate the thought of paying someone since everyone seems to be charging triple for "poultry" buildings right now. Lots of counties and towns here are going pro chicken ect, so lots of people trying to make a buck selling buildings.
Hugs and prayers for good results for your hubby. Have they ruled out chronic lyme disease yet? A lot of physicians refuse to acknowledge that it exists and would cause chronic pain and MS-like symptoms.
I always view Geese as Crazy Loving Old People. They're always so sweet and seem to want to help every single baby.

I found this labeled as a "Goose":

Too cute, but I can't help but laugh at people who don't know a goose from a duck.
It makes me want to make tiny duck clothes

My ducks would never forgive me.
Oh my gosh - that's funny. When I first starting getting into Serama chickens about a year ago, I couldn't believe the drama! I wanted to butt in and say, "Uh, guys, you do realize that all this nasty fighting and name calling is over CHICKENS, right?!?" That's why I really like this thread. It's my fav on BYC.

Celtic - I am so sorry to hear about your husband. I hope the specialists can figure out what's going on.

So sorry about your dog.
I so felt like saying that too! There's is STILL someone who keeps posting to try to prove me wrong. You know what dude I have nothing to prove to the "Chicken Folk" so if your that desperate go for it.

Some people aren't worth the energy spent to argue with.
What kind of duck eggs are you looking for? I might know of someone in Olympia.
Any kind of duck, I suppose. Was hoping to make an "egg hunt" road trip.

Poor girl! So glad you have a good vet to help her out.

I'm more than frustrated!! I feel so bad for what this girl has been through and will continue to go through for the next 7-10 days. Plus, it will make it that much harder to bond with her. So much for the fun of enjoying a blossoming new relationship. Here is her face. Doesn't look very happy, eh?
That looks miserable. Glad you're doing everything you can for her.
Sigh they can't even nice to other chicken people.

I now have 4 1/2 dozen chicken eggs to hatch! Going to be a huge hatch for my boss!

Going to a Joel Salatin talk tomorrow night. Should be interesting.

Nothing else exciting going on here. Two of my little trout runner babies don't look like trouts to me. I should probably worry, right? They are healthy though.

Thanks, quackers. It is no fun. Hope to put her with a pair of grey dewlaps tomorrow. That should make her feel a little better.

How's things at your place?

Celtic - I hope they find answers, and are able to thus find a remedy for his malady.

Iain - I'll try to do a better job on the wrap today. I'll try the tuck, and see if it helps. Congrats on selling some goosies. I'm thinking about selling some ducks. I'd probobly regret it later, but right now I'm feeling tired of the work. In another few monthes though, I'll be over it. I know its just part of the transitional state of my life right now, and will probobly pass.

Christine - Sorry about your dog. When my beloved Kiser had cancer, we did the treatment, but it came back and I hat to put her to sleep. It was aweful. I hope he's comfy for awhile before the end comes.

My sebbie hatched overnight. She is very loud, and clearly has an opinion. SInce she's a lone hatch, and no eggs are due whatsoever for another 28 days, I guess I'll snag the lone grey toulouse, who is also a little guy compared to the others, and make them buddies tomarrow. I'm gonna watch her for a day, and be sure she's well and sturdy on her feat before. I mean, its a bigger goose, or a handfull of turkeys. I'm thinking the goose, but am open to the opinions of others.
