Hello, I'm a newbie here. My clutch of seven mallard eggs started pipping last night, which was the start of day 26. Doesn't that seem a bit early? Anyway, one of the eggs is pipping weird, it seems. First, it's pipped at the end where there is no air sac. I thought they were supposed to pip at the wide end of the egg. Secondly, while most of the eggs just have a little bump, this one has a circle of shell broken off and little bits of shell scattered around it. It looks like the membrane underneath is intact, but I haven't really opened the incubator, other than real quick to spray some water. I'm in AZ, so I'm worried, it might not be humid enough for them. This all started about eight hours ago, so I know I have some time, but I'm worried about that weird one. I'll try to get a pic to post. I don't see that egg moving at all, but some of the others shake on and off.

Here's a pic of what the egg in question looks like. You can see on the left, the part of the egg that has pipped and what it looks like. That's the best picture I could get, any closer and the camera blurs it all out. Don't want to open the incubator too much. The one to the right has pipped on the underside, is that normal also?

A few of the members on here have dealt with pipping in the wrong end of the egg so hopefully they will chime in to help. It's still early yet but I know that these that pip in the wrong end usually have to have assistance. Let me PM someone on here and see if she can come on and help.

Morning all...............

Coyote so cute that heart on the chest. YAY for having a wonderful family filled Christmas with no drama. So glad you were all able to be together.

We had a lovely day of good food and lots of relaxing.

bhhastin............ducks take 28 days (on average) to hatch and should be put in lock down on day 25 (stop turning and raise humidity). They can start pipping at anytime once in lock down. As mentioned a wrong way pipper can hatch and be just fine. The key is to not help too soon or too much too quickly. If the membrane is open and the duckling can get air i wouldnt stress yet over it. A sewing needle that is clean can be used to open the membrane if it is not so the duckling can breath easier. I highly recommend reading this guide: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/491013/goose-incubation-hatching-guide-completed and following it for your duck egg pipped at the wrong end.

Thanks, yeah, I am not wanting to get involved at all, hopefully. I'd rather just be an observer and trust that nature will take its course. I saw something online about removing the egg turner to give them more room and let the eggs settle in a more optimal position, but that would have involved taking all the eggs out and I honestly hate handling them at all, I've only candled them twice (I'm terrified I'm going to drop one).

I saw a video online of ducks hatching in a Brinsea Mini Advance with the turner still in, so I left mine in. They were set the afternoon of 11/30, so I stopped the turner on Christmas Eve and put all the eggs with the numbers up, so that I could tell which one was which (now I'm wondering if that could have messed them up, especially after reading the link that CelticOaks recommended). I've kept one water reservoir filled the whole time, then also filled the second yesterday (Christmas) with warm water. Since then, I've just been watching and spritzing a bit. Several of the eggs wiggle off and on and there are some occasional peeps. This is all very exciting (my childhood ducklings all came to us hatched), but it's also very nerve wracking! :)

They are all supposed to be mallards, but two of the eggs are bit larger than the rest, so I'm wondering if I might get something else as well. I had a nightmare last night that I hatched rabbits! lol
