Thread formerly known as Hatch day is today

Thanks! So I did and eggtopsy on one egg and it was scrambled idk of it was even fertile! How can u tell?
If they have blood rings they were fertile but the embryo died. If no blood ring it's really impossible to tell if they were infertile or were damaged by shipping. Ancona eggs really should be well veined up at 7 days.

Ya that one had nothing no bloodring or viening! I only have one out of ten that has viening but everyone thinks it quite on me so now I won't have any! Its day eight for them so I should no!

Quote: you know what I did...my husband built out of pvc pipe and play pen covered it with fiber glass patio panel...tall enough for me to hunch over a walk in...so they could be out in the day safe and I put them in a crate and haul them in at night
the frame is the pvc pipe then wrapped in the plastic chicken net...
we use it as one of the breeding pens now

Thanks for the idea! I have lots of pvc pipes so I could make that this weekend. What about a wire dog pen? I bought one that has a wire top so the hawks cant get to them. The ducklings cant fit through the bars anymore and I could make a house with lots of hay for them to keep warm in. Could they go in that for the day if they have a warm place to go? They are 2 weeks old today. I also have been having problems with my LeBistro Auto Gravity waterer being empty in the morning after I fill it the night before. It was empty again today and there is a lot of water in the pan below. Could it be leaking? Or are the ducks just making a mess? Has anyone else had a problem with this waterer?

anything that gives them some room and keeps them safe...yes the ducks drain the water!

I don't really worry about them having water at night I want them to be dry...plus my ducks and bantams live in the same coop at this time so I don't want the bedding wet in there...
at night when I start putting the babies in the coop I keep them in the crate...which is a wire dog crate wrapped in the plastic chicken net...so they are safe and I cover three quarters of the crate with a blanket for extra warmth. I have over 30 birds of varying ages 4 months and younger in that coop and lots of bedding material...it's been in the low 40s at night but they are warm enough...if its very cold at night for birds that don't have many feathers yet you may just want to haul them in..in their crate...to the house or where ever is warm enough...and haul them back out to the playpen in the day...I don't know how big yours are...mine are dwarf and tiny calls...I used dog bowls as little pools for them when they were younger and now they use a deep cat pan...but not in the chicken yard...they now come out to swim...too many chicken babies drown...anywho that's what we've come up with!
