they are no longer adorable.
the black rooster is mean.
he flys up at you when you walk in the door.
not that he can get far. but still.
and everyone looks at him like omg you aint suppose to do that.
and he bites you if you pick him up.
but htey mamma is the sweetest little thing.
My first rooster was like that. He bit me once and got knocked across the coop, never tried it again with me. Everyone else he still considered fair game though. Unfortunately for him he started acting like that while I was in the hospital having my youngest, and I had surgery a month later so I didn't have time to retrain him. Not to mention it's hard to find people to take care if your chickens while you're in the hosp when they attack people. When he flogged my 2 year old it was the end for him.
My roo I have now has always been a perfect gentleman. He keeps his distance from everyone, and is sweet to the girls. I do occasionally pick him up and carry him around, just cause he's so cute and fluffy, lol. I also don't let him eat from my hand. Now he doesn't even try, he just runs up and starts clucking for the girls to get their treats. Give him a little more time too, those hormones can make teenage roos turn into real jerks for a bit, but sometimes they just need a few weeks and they snap out of it.
well if he acts like that our current rooster wldnt put up with him.
and he has senority..
so one of the calmer boys will stay.
we cant keep all the roosters.
we usually dont even hatch our cohins. but this girl was determined to have babies so she hid her next and turned up with babies that had feathers startin to come in ( the 2nd pic actually)

I need to find an auction around here. There's got to be one somewhere lol. I want some good black east indies, but I keep hearing eggs are hard to hatch, ducklings don't ship well, and I don't want to pay the shipping for adults.

I want toy ducks too!
do you have swap meets anywhere around you?
if so that is one of the best places to get poultry in the spring.
most calls arent laying yet this year. a
nd i suppose indies are prolly about the same.
i would think they would be slightly easier to hatch since they are a little bigger.
but not sure

Actually, I was thinking, which is always a dangerous thing, that Lav and black would eventually give me a blue, which in turn would give me choc. (With a few steps in between.)
And if nothing else.. I would have a good time trying.
It may or may not have been a good time but it definitely would have been a long time
You wouldn't have gotten chocolate that way. Or blue.
Maybe I should start with something easier... Like my idea for a Barred lavender. Unless that idea is already taken. I better google that.

I saw a few this summer, but they always fell on a weekend I couldn't go. There's a big one in Joplin, but that's 4 hours away... There was one in Warrensburg, and then a man with extra stock setting up at the Family Center in Harrisonville. I'll keep my eyes peeled for some.
Bunsen is looking like he's turning into a handsome boy.
I see the greenish bill for sure.
The guy in harrisonville also sells at bonner springs and somewhere else, but is a hatchery and only has a few production breeds I think. There are swaps around here, but flea market type, I don't remember seeing animals other than the occasional puppies. I may just end up getting ideal BEI, then breeding for better ones.
