Thread formerly known as Hatch day is today

I have everybody in the garage outside. That was a job right thar.

Also, my little swedish flower hen that came out grey... well, I'm pretty sure it's gonna die. It doing that hole peeping for no reason, sleeping all day, falling over not getting up... you know the deal. :(

AND Fiona found the mirror I put in for her. She's happy as a lark now. :)

My little Flippy chick is finally up and walking and pecking and pooping and pecking at his/her hatchmate now. There's hope... I was ready to give up on my chickie, but hubby helped and now it's just being a slightly lopsided chick. Still working on that weaker leg...

Are you sure you didnt see it in your green jello?

If you car is rated as written-off by the insurance cmopany can you get it road registered again? Here when a car/truck is written off you can't register it again :(

I agree 100% with Celtic about buying eggs from people with quality birds only. And also about breeding only from good examples of the breed.

QJ, I will have a look for the box update!! :))

Evelle: so sorry about your truck. Must have been one p1sser of an accident. Glad you're okay.

In my state, a totalled out vehicle can be given a salvage title once repaired. Not necessarily a good thing. I don't know if that's nationwide or not, but that's how my ex-husband ended up with the junker from hell.

I'd only take the truck back if I was able to do the work myself. Framework might be hella pricey.

Yes everyone should buy what they like, but if they ask an Oppinion on birds or want to have the best possible bird for a particular price range then there are plenty of flocks out there to be avoided. Lots of crappy feathered Sebbies out there that are fine pets. Pets don't represent the breed though, nor should they be bred together and eggs sold for such a high premium just because they are a Sebastopol

Same goes for all breeds. Why would you buy inferior examples of a bird if you could get a quality bird instead? Culls are a fact of life in breeding, just because a bird is a cull doesn't make it a bad pet. Someone shouldn't build a breeding flock around inferior or cull birds though. This just continues the down grade of the breed. If you want a breeding flock of anything, you invest in quality to produce eggs and off spring to sell.

It would be like becoming a back yard puppy mill for birds. Getting the latest hot bird no matter what the quality and breeding to make $ and not to improve the breed and produce good to great off spring.

I respect your opinion, Celtic! That's the attitude I expect from a breeder/seller!

On the other hand, I have a mixed flock of pet birds who give me eggs. I cull, but only unhealthy birds that would require extra effort to keep alive. And even that has an exception or two... I'm a pushover.

I think that if one honestly represents their stock, and its true quality and background, there would be no need for our threads, where we not only seek hatching comfort and advice, but compare notes on egg sellers. However, a great many folks seem to always believe they've bought the best quality stock, but got a deal. It is difficult for the ametuer to adequately train themselves to recognize the standards they are truly looking for, and it is time consuming.

I'm happy that in most cases, eggs I purchase have been adequatley represented, or I am satisfied to merely have the specifmens. I am no duck show lady. I've never shown a bird in my whole life, I'm an egg lady. Thats my passion in ducks. They are cute, but they'd better lay me some eggs. If I were looking for show quality, I'd do as I see others doing; asking questioins, doing my homework, checking resources.

Everyone here is a wealth of information withen their niche, and I thank you for your presence here.

Well said!

In the end, I wish the people I had bought my first ducklings from had been of the mindset of Celtic. Do my flocks' imperfections make me love them any less? Of course not! Now if they aren't all laying consistently, that's another song and dance.

The ducks I'm hatching right now are of better quality stock than my current runners. I wouldn't feel right selling people runners that might be mini-runners like some of mine seem to be.
