Do you have an eyedropper?

I usually take the eyedropper and put a tiny drop of water on the tip of the bill and see if ducky opens it's bill a little bit. Then go reeeeeeeallly slow. If it aspirates the water, it's a dead duckling.

Who's the expert on dropper feeding here? I know someone can explain better than I! *wail*

That's exactly how I do it. But if he's as weak as she says.. I'd be afraid of him choking.

Did this come on really quick DG? What's the deal?!

I can't wait to see pics in the morning! I'm not expecting any babies.... but I swear I heard a peep from the incubators when I was cooling the goose eggs!! Nothing due until saturday.

Thanks Marty and GQ. This coop was given to me by my BIL cuz he moved out of state. He had it on that second part there, but it wasn't very coop proof. My dad thought I'd have more room if I kept the house separate and rebuilt a run. (?? My dad thought I might need more room ?? Interesting.... I wonder why he would get that notion..)

Forgot to throw a shout out to Kevin

And to say UTAH: Hang in there girl. You'll have the best sleep after this is all over. And then take a break! I did and now I'm ready to go again!

More room? Never. Says the girl who was eyeing dog kennel kits at the hardware store today... where I went to get plexi for the window on the hatcher that hubs is building for me....

I wish I had the gutts to cull the baby... Its killing me to watch him sit there and slowly stop breathing....

No, marty. He fully absorbed the yolk, and all the blood. He wasn't ever interested in food, just cuddling. He did drink water, and he was always wobbley on his feet. How would one of you kill a baby to put it out of its pain? Cause I can't watch this any longer... :he :hit

It may sound gross but sharp kitchen shears. Hold baby in bag, snip neck. Don't look. You'll fell better if you don't look (I did).

I think breaking it's neck is the most humane death but at this point I would just make sure he feels secure and safe with you because nature is taking it's course very rapidly at this point.

Personally, I would have to put him cozy, and leave the room. I'm just not good at that part when they are little. If they live, and have issues, I grow them to eat, but then its easier. With babies its horrible.

Your kindness and sensitivity is what makes you a BYC Friend, DG. You can't help that it hurts you.

Kevin, how is the best way to break the neck of a duckling? I would have felt better not doing it the way I was taught.

(On this depressing note, I have to go cull some muscovy drakes tomorrow who are humping the farm chickens)

x2

Honestly, I would rather just snuggle him until the end if I had to choose. The other way is faster, but you'll feel horrible for doing it even if it is the right thing.
