Thread formerly known as Hatch day is today

It's bad! I am almost happy to be done with hatching this season. If I find dewlaps, it will be my last egg purchase. Otherwise, no more eggs for me!

All I have so far is one chick...usually swimming in babies by now. I'm going to be a wreck when my first duck eggs go into lock down on the 14th or so. I want to order some runner eggs, and some silkie eggs for brooders next spring...but I'm scared to! ARGH!!!

Wow, they must be pretty rare. I can see that for really nice buff dewlaps, but I don't know about $80 for anything appearing so normal. They are pretty, but geese do tend to be attractive, after all. However, I will grant you that a friendly goose is a very good thing.

Are you gonna try and get them? I'm bidding on some blue copper morans right now. I want some super dark eggs too. Now, if the anconas due next week will just grace me with some blue or green eggs, I'll be a happy duck.

Afternoon all.

Lots of great quiet, calmer breeds of geese. Metzers has a wonderful comparison table on goose breeds.

Marty, blue coppers won't lay the sper dark almost mahogany eggs like the black coppers. They do lay a lovely egg though. They also take a very VERY long time to mature and begin laying. They and the Ameracuana make waiting for an egg almost unbearable.

Thanks for the tip. I wish I could just find someone to ship me 6 black coppers and 6 blue/green layors. I can live with the wait, the pekings take up to 7 monthes sometimes to lay. Do they take even longer than that? I guess I thought all copper morans laid very dark eggs. Well, my max bid is very low, so either way, it won't be a big loss.

No - if/when I get some, I will probably get a pair of goslings from Flip Flop Ranch.

Do you want eggs or chicks Marty? If eggs to hatch I can make recomendations for them for right now buying. If you want to wait or want chicks let me do some digging, or our sons flock will start laying soon and will be isolated black coppers that I am sure he will part with some eggs from. His flock is a very nice but young BCM he is working on, mine is an EE flock we have introduced pure Ameracuana blood into to increase egg color.

Christine, no idea. I was meaning that you can compare multiple breeds and see which are known for meat, eggs, quietness ect in one spot. They don't cover all breeds, but is helpful for those new to geese to quickly gain knowledge.
