Hey I made 3 banana breads yesterday with my duck eggs & all 5 of my 6 eggs were double yolkers !

I am in total disarray.

So my styrofoam cooler still had 3 eggs in it. I checked all of them for signs of life and there was nothing. It had already been 3 days past hatch day so I decided I would take the cooler outside by the trash pile.

Well, something must have been right because my mom walked by the old incubator and there was chirping. An egg. I took the egg that pipped out. I didn't have the heart to leave him in there to die. I set him in a bowl in the yard and let him try to hatch on his own. He hatched completely on his own.

However, he was in the wrong end of the egg, and his yolk was not completely absorbed. He had a large bulge on his tummy. I am very worried about him. He is so lively and strong! He can nearly stand up on his own. His head and neck look strong, but the tummy area worried me. Right now he is resting under a lamp.

I will see what happens when he fluffs up. I will try to get him to drink the vitamins to give him a jump start.

I don't know if I can handle burrying another duckling :(

Sweety the sad fact of having animals is the sometimes you have to bury them.... Do all you can for all of them and celebrate ALL BABIES you raise. Best advice I can give you.

Hmm, its not positive that his yolk is exposed. You've got to keep him from getting it torn and dirty. Odds are bad, but do your best. Clean container, wrap baby maybe in a bit of saran (since you can't tuck him back in the egg and wrap it too make him wait, which is what ought to be done). Good luck, and I'm with PSue, some eggs and babies just don't have it togather.

Oooohhh. So cute! I hope they continue to improve.

Can you put him in the "hospital" with the other two? I would think that the best thing is to keep him clean to try to avoid infection.

I feel much better now!

He sat under a lamp and a moist towel and preens himself.

He is isolated in the brood box now. Unbelieable! He walks and stands and chirps better than the two with bad legs!

His swelling in his stomach has gone done a lot now. Still hasn't detached from his cord, but I have some hope. He drank some of the vitamin water and now he is standing in his separate isolated container by himself. Maybe he was bulged because he was in the wrong end of the egg, too hot outside in the incubator that i threw out. I'm not sure.

The good news is, he looks incredibly strong and healthy for a 3 hour old duckling.

Will keep you updated.
