Throw a puppy into the mix

What a cutie! Stick with him, he'll soon grow out of his "puppyness" and you can brag what a good boy he is.

Do yourself a favor and crate train your puppy. Then you can go to reunions and know that he isn't destroying the house. Make sure you get a book or do some online research on crate training. Properly used, a crate is an asset to both dog and owner.

RHRanch, that is what I was just going to post!

Put him in his crate any time you can't keep an eye on him. When he's out of the crate, tether him to you! And, most important of all, a tired puppy is a well-behaved puppy!
Not just physical exercise, but mental as well. Start him on some easy basic obedience, maybe look up clicker training. He's a hunting dog, so a flirt pole would be great exercise for him. Plus let him practice a bit of his killing instinct!

At 7 months old, he will really start to have his hormones kick in and he will become a teenage boy. He will get distracted by "funny urges" as my grandma used to call them. You will swear that he has lost his mind and might possibly be the stupidest creature ever born. But, in a couple months it will pass.

Thanks, all

He hates his crate. He slept in the bed last night, after figuring out he can get up on things with a running start. The food bowl idea never crossed my mind! Never heard of clicker training. The girls (all of them) found found a way out of the fence this morning. There was a turkey carcass by the wood pile. The puppy was licking a wounded magpie in the driveway. Strange morning.

if he hasn't been crated before, he will argue and complain at first. It's not because he hates the crate, it's because he isn't able to do what he wants so he is throwing a tantrum.

A crate isn't a "cage" anymore than putting your toddler in a playpen is a cage. It is a safe place for them to chill and relax while your focus is elsewhere.

A good way to start it off is feeding in the crate. Of course, that only works if you feed on a schedule not free-feeding.

I've owned and fostered dozens of dogs through the years and crates are a godsend. With such an active guy he really needs tethering, though. Dogs are such creatures of habit, if you can put up with him tied to your belt for a week or two, he should normal out considerably. Prevention beats correction by a mile. Is he a JRT or a rat terrier?

It sounds like you need to take him to puppy classes for training or home training.

Crates work very well for potty training and prevent the pup from eating everything in sight. Marrow bones and kong toys filled with food/treats work well to occupy him and satisfy his chewing. We use flavored nylon bones too. A carpet cleaner is a must! I love our Hoover. For males, you can purchase doggy diapers while your potty training. Good luck, he's very cute! Dogs with high energy need a lot of exercising.

Nice looking Jack russell! I have bred them for years now and Rosie had 5 litters before I spayed her...she is 12 now and still catches her frisbee like she was 3. She can jump a 4' fence like it wasnt there.

That is 2 cats behind her on the hay. She wont chase anything unless it runs or flys away from her..then it's fair game.

Do you know how it took me to get 3 pups to stay in the tub for a picture?

Crate training is essential! Only feed treats or their meal inside the crate! then it becomes their "den" Lots of excersise like ball chasing in the back yard is essential! Or long walks on a leash.
If they potty on the carpet...blot it up with paper towel (or pick it up) take it and the pup outside ..place it on the ground and let them or make them sniff it...praise praise praise (act like a fool if you have too) "Good dog! what a good dog! potty OUTSIDE! yayayayaya!" and give a treat.....repeat over and over! restrict water after 8pm. Feed dinner early. No food left out in bowls all day. An empty JRT is a good JRT. Jacks are notoriously hard to potty train. While her pups were little I would keep them in a excersise pen on newspaper and gradually made the paper into a smaller and smaller pile until I didnt have to spread it out anymore. They would go to it everytime. Then the new owners would know to put down some newspaper for their new pup and move it closer and closer to the door and eventually move it outside.

Put cayene pepper mixed in a little water on the extension cords. you have to puppy proof everything in the house or baby gate him in a safe area..laundry rooms work or the kitchen (think no carpet)

When he is out, if he grabs something he shouldnt have take it away and tell him "NO! this is mine! " then give him one of his toys and say "this is yours Good boy!" and then play with him with it.
They ARE just like kids (Babies)

I hope those are not fire ants. Not sure where you are but fire ants will kill anything FAST!!. He looks like a rat terrier / jack russel, VERY SMART, a little too smart if they are bored. You must keep his energy level down, which means lots of discipline and exercise. They are diggers and jumpers, and hunters. Have a blast he is awful cute!!!
