Debating whether I should just go ahead, & use Pea for the project, breed her to one, or each of the F1s I'd create, or just wait until the new Cock(s) mature after I hatch them.

I would breed her to a Malay cockerel right away. Kickstart your project with the barred gene right away! The Malay crosses will look pretty sporty even in the first generation.Debating whether I should just go ahead, & use Pea for the project, breed her to one, or each of the F1s I'd create, or just wait until the new Cock(s) mature after I hatch them.
I guess I could, but that'll create sex links. Barred Males only.I would breed her to a Malay cockerel right away. Kickstart your project with the barred gene right away! The Malay crosses will look pretty sporty even in the first generation.
At least you would get started. Do you have any barred males that could be integrated into this project giving you barred in both male and female?I guess I could, but that'll create sex links. Barred Males only.
A Heritage Plymouth Barred Rock rooster. He's the same size as my largest Malay cockerels. I was gonna squeeze him in somewhere. At least you would get started. Do you have any barred males that could be integrated into this project giving you barred in both male and female?
I was actually thinking about crossing him to my Malays pullets.Or you put the Heritage Plymouth Barred Rock rooster over one or two of your Malays. Using the Malays as the female will help you retain the Malay carriage and station more as the female contributes a bit more to the genotype than the male. The male does just as much with the color as the females.
That would be a quicker way to get the results you're looking for.I can do both, cross the Malays with pea, & the Heritage Plymouth Barred Rock with Malays.
