~***~TigerLily Trail's 2012 Foaling & Kidding Thread~***~ PICS of Zoe's Bucks Pg 7 Post #65

YAY! baby goats are sooo much fun!! make sure you have a kidding kit ready, i am always at every birth. prepare for the unexpected, like stuck kids, bottle babies, malpresentations.

we used to hand breed, but its so much easier to put the buck in with the doe for 30 days. that usually gets everyone bred. even though you dont know the exact date. this year i knew when each doe was bred, and took the buck out 23 days from the time the last do got covered.

we use puppy pads to put under the does bum as the goo is really sticky lol and it helps keep the babies cleaner till i can dry them.
many does will have a plug in each teat, so when the kid is born, milk 1-2 streams of colosrum out to make sure that the plug is out.

do you plan on disbudding?? best to do it when the kids are around a week or so old. sometimes the horn buds are hard to feel, there are times i have had to wait till they were 4 weeks old, or like my tiny kid , peanut, his head was sooo small, so i waited to disbud him till he was 3 months old...
this year we are disbudding our selves, usually we take them to the dairy and have someone do it for us.

good luck, and dont forget the pics!! lol

! What do you recommend kit wise? I always have plenty of pee pads & towels handy

, & closer to due dates I will be getting some Land O Lakes Doe Match (what I raised Tonka & Mei on). I do plan to disbud, but just the though gives me a heart attack. I saw it done with Mei & Tonka, & I still feel awful. I know its better & safer, but I need to find some way to work out the guilt. I dont suppose theres some type of pain killer I can give them in advance is there? I plan to buy a Rhinehart X-30. Kinda a dumb question what size should I get for pygmy kids: 1/2", 3/8", or 1/4"? I know the 1/4" is supposed to be for pygmies but because of Zoe's size im not sure if her kids will be small enough. Yep I can feel the waiting madness sitting in. How do you all BARE it
barnie.gif
??? Also what brand of colostrum do you recommend I should get for just in case?

Well it looks like Mei is back in heat again. Today while giving treats Tonka did quite a bit of mounting, & afterward I examined her pooch, wooha, or whatever you would like to call it, & I think he might have successfully bred her this time

. Just in case ive also put them in their stall/barn for the evening & plan to do the same for the next few days. Crossing my fingers she takes this time

. Zoe doesnt look like she is going into or has gone back into heat. No swelling, goop, or vocalizations. She does appear to have gas though because she kept her tail raised for the most part xD.

Update: I had a period where I think I sort of goofed on the girls' heat schedule, but it doesnt looks like Zoe has gone back into heat at all so I think she may be prego
wee.gif
! She hasnt been vocal at all except when asking for treats, & nothing under her tail has given signs of heat. Mei is questionable but it looks like she hasnt gone back into heat either although she still shows her beyond obvious dislike for Tonka. Poor guy. If Mei does go into heat again it will be between the 8 & the 11th. Im going to still be keeping a close eye on both of them. Not sure if ive mentioned it or not, but I will be leaving Tonka in with both does till the end of March.

for a kidding kit i reccomend having puppy pads, BOSE (injectable) a calcium drench ( gloves, ky jelly (just in case) sutchers just in case a doe tears really bad, helps to have a knowlegable goat person on call for the first few times you kid goats out.

really disbudding isnthat bad if done correctly should take about 30 seconds each side, they usually freak out more about being held still than the iron. you can give banamine but it would be really hard to give a 1-3 lb kid considering the dose is 1cc per 100 lbs.
i have the smallest size for the iron to dis bud and one that is a bit bigger. i rarely use the bigger one even on my meat kids.

oh the waiting. every year when the first doe starts bagging , i look up websites and read up. i read read read. and wait.. get excited when i see the plug and then i have to wait. i stay busy, with face book, twitter, marestare... not to mention our human kids my hubby and my other critters. this year we have not only 6 does that should be bred, but also 6 miniature horses . 2013 should prove interesting, as we will have 12-15 does kiddin, and 4-7 mares GAHH! ill go crazy right with you tho! lol good luck i really hope your does settle soon!

Thanks for all the advice! 6 does & 6 minis... wow... Oh well. The other side of sanity is more fun anyways

! Would you mind reminding me when your menagerie is due?
Ive been checking the girls daily, & so far there are no signs of either going back into heat. Mei is still semi swollen (that tends to stay for a while) but isnt giving any other of her normal heat signs so
idunno.gif
. Maybe she finally took

!

Ive also heard that staying swollen can be a sign they are pregnant. Is that true from the start or only when they are getting close to kidding? Also now im blanking: How far into the pregnancy is it when a doe's stomach really starts showing?

No official heat signs from either doe :D. Im pretty positive that Zoe took on New Years Eve, & I believe that Mei took sometime around Jan 18th. Approx due dates are as followed if im right. Ive also noticed that over the past few days Zoe has started to lay down quite a bit. Normally she lies down sometimes when she is eating & to sleep at night, but lately she lies down quite a bit more. maybe she is getting adapted to pregnancy or something???

Zoe: May 25th, if she goes a week early or late: May 18 - June 1rst

Mei: June 12, if she goes a week early or late: June 5 - June 19

I took some pics of the girls the other day. I will upload them ASAP if anyone would care to see them
