~***~TigerLily Trail's 2012 Foaling & Kidding Thread~***~ PICS of Zoe's Bucks Pg 7 Post #65

Whooa! Zoe is HUGE.
I'm guessing six in there.

See why im guessing she will be having at least triplets
big_smile.png
? Lol. Yeah she is HUGE. Minor development in both does' bags but not much.

Amber's milk is still opaque & cloudy but was actually a bit more clear this evening. Her bag also appears larger. Still extremely cloudy & cold but at least the cold & rain has stopped for now. The rest of the week is supposed to be warm & sunny except for Thursday being partly cloudy with temps no lower than 68

More pics of Amber. Bag & wooha pics at the bottom. Her milk is much cloudier & yellow today, & it is pretty sticky. I also think her vulva looks looser. Today she rolled in front of someone she doesnt know, her manure is looser than usual, but that could be because im adding pellets to her diet so I use less hay, & while I was watching her she rubbed her butt back & forth against one of the panels in her stall. Could be nothing, but I have not seen her do that before & thought is was interesting. Wondering if there is a possibility of an Easter foal or if she will go before then. Thankfully that complete stranger (to her) happened to be helping me finish the stall in her pen so except for a few small details it is completely DONE

! I need to add some more straw, but I will wait till she is acting a bit more off. Anyone care to start guessing when she will foal

I have been watching this thread off and on and can kinda relate. My buddy has a heard of goats and already has about 25 kids. He still has a couple of young does that are yet to deliver. On Sunday evening we had to assist a young doe as one leg was turned backwards and one forward. We got it straightened out and got the little one delivered. Both are now doing fine. I also have a pregnant mare that wasn't due till next Friday. Well this afternoon when I got out to the property there was a beautiful baby girl that looked to have been born this morning some time. Her dad has a bit more white than this mare and his pattern is black and white. I was shocked to see this little one. A beautiful, healthy baby and the kids (my children) are so excited. My youngest daughter wants to name her Magnolia. Also have two incubators full. One with guineas and one with chicken eggs. It'll be a busy spring.

Sure sounds busy. 25 kids! I cant even imagine lol! Well I sorta can because the breeder I got Mei & Tonka from has a large set up like that. Maybe larger

My mare last year was due the 23rd-25th of June & foaled the 17th
tongue.png
. I figured the early baby would be a filly because ive heard boys take longer to develop, but I guess not lol. Draygo was a big baby & still is. I plan to try to hatch silkies, mutt chicks, & muscovies this summer, but I need to get some pieces for my bators first xD. Yep definitely gonna be a busy spring...& summer

!!!!!!! Ive decided to call her Eyes Wide Open at Daybreak A.K.A Dawn

. Thinking she is dark bay, & she is SO friendly. After I gave her a nice long scratch scratch, when Amber wasnt trying to kick my teeth in since she is being SUPER protective, she called to me twice! Definitely a good day! More pics to come

Congratulations. It is great to see she finally got here and both or doing fine. My mare is very protective also. I have a pen within a pen that I put the mare in with a bit of feed. This allows me to handle the baby without getting my block knocked off. My pen is the same stock panels you have so the mare can see here baby at all times.

Do enjoy your young one.

If Amber doesnt mellow out in a few days I will start doing that. I dont mind a mare protecting her new born, but when she starts backing toward me & semi charging every chance she gets, even when Im not close, I have an issue. Thankfully I set up my pen so that I can disconnect the "alley" to the stall & can turn it into just the roundpen or just the stall when necessary, & I can do that as well as make the roundpen a bit smaller. I could put Amber in the smaller pen & Dawn & me in the stall area. Earlier a few friends came to see the new arrival, & she tried to approach them, but off course Amber cut her off xP. Im also wondering if she is so aggressive because this is her first baby... Anyways I fed them a while ago & except for the giraffe wobble she looked like she is doing good

One of the very few difficult parts of rescuing is knowing you cant keep them all, & I love her already lol. Oh well, one day she, & her mom, will make someone awesome horses

Ill add some more pics ASAP.

I've found nature's mothers (I've dealt in numbers with cows and mares primarily) protective instincts are driven by their maternal lines. Some variability is to be expected, even with the same cow/mare on different pregnancies/deliveries. First time mothers, especially if they are only two years old, may (or may not) be as attentive/protective as they may be on subsequent motherhoods. If she is that protective on her first then she will always be this way. Luckily, most mothers in nature will back off considerably after the first couple of weeks.

My mare is behaving much better with this foal than she did with a previous baby a couple of years ago. Then, she came at me with teeth and front feet. In contrast, the year before that, she was more tolerable. When not in foal this is one of the best riding horses I have ever owned. She can be a bit balky to a new rider but if you set the tone early no problems the rest of the day.

So with all that said, I love my horses the best. I broke my first pony 38 years ago at the age of 10 enjoyed my many experiences since then. Learning their language and communicating on their level remains a joy to me. Take good care of your little one and you will have given it the best "human relationship" start a horse could have.

Yesterday two of my children and I were in the pen with Magnolia. After rubbing her and picking up feet, etc. we all stood together in front of her. We took three quick steps forward and she quickly followed. We then ran forward 5 or 6 steps and she ran after us. It was a good example for my kids in how impresssionable these young animals are. We all had a ball.
