Can I trim my hen's toenails so they can't accidentally make a hole if they step on the egg?

It may or may not help. Some hens are more clumsy. Collecting eggs often can help. You should definitely trim nail if and when it's necessary.

Egg shells should be hard enough that a toenail won't poke a hole in them.
