Tips for Coyotes

Our black lab does a great job at keeping the coyotes away. Our beagle will bark if she hears them, but the lab will chase them off. Our Husky, Chow, Shepherd, Mix hides in the dog house as soon as she hears them, or thunder, or a gunshot, or a oppossum. shes kinda a wussy.

We have coyotes by the dozens... Here is a partial list of guard dogs lost to coyotes in my neighborhood in the last 10 years. I lost 2 Boxers 90, 95 pounds of solid muscle. Nieghbor lost a 110 pound Rotty/ lab mix. Another sheep raising neighbor lost 3 border collies. Another lost a German Shephard. Another lost a Doberman Pincher/ Lab mix. Another lost a Rhodesian ridgeback. Another lost a standard poodle. Most of these dogs could put up a good fight one on one, however what the coyotes do is pick a fight then they do a nip and running fight untill they lure the dog to the pack where they are ripped appart and partially eaten. Most of the neighbors shoot the coyotes on sight . When we kill them, we usually hang them on the fence as this tends to divert the coyotes for a while after they come to sniff at the bodies at night. We have lost count of how may have gone over to the other side. Barnyard cats, well they have a lifespan of 6 months.

thats why most lgds run animals off there property and dont keep on chaseing them im sorry this has happened to your neighborhood im gonna guess most of these people did not fence there dogs ?

All properties are fenced along the 2 mile long road consisting of 20 acre parcels. Surrounding these are 200 - 750- 5,000 acre properties. What good would comletely fencing in a dog do other than barking which the coyotes totally ignore? Coyotes go up, over or thru fences ... dogs will too. I have 6' high chain link fence all along the front and horse fence on my 20 acres in 3 cross fenced pastures. I also have 2 acres of grounds around our house. Mine Boxers were also chained when we were away. They actually broke their chains ( 2 different times) . One chased the coyote up the dry creek (70 feet across and 12 feet deep going through our ranch) never to return. A year and a half later the other one broke the chain and had a running fight down the driveway , up the road and over the hill on a 750 acre wheat field, ( I found coyote hair in several places down our driveway and the 1 mile long section of road) never to retur n. The neighbor's Rottie/ lab mix chased the coyote through 3 -5 acre sheep fenced pastures with 2 top barbed wires on top where he found it's head and hide and little else. Two of the border collies was killed in a crossfenced sheep pastures, the third right in the lambing pen. etc.
