Tis Time for a March 2020 Hatch-a-long!

Okay I’m in a rush.... read this post on in my thread about leg issues. I tried to resolve for three weeks and with vitamin B it immediately resolved. This chick is now a laying pullet that wobbles and hops because I waited so long to get vitamin B2. There’s good info throughout the thread in follow up posts .

I forgot about this thread! Glad to hear she's still doing well!

Sorry I've been MIA. We just hit Day 21 at noon, and yet here I am with 12/14 eggs hatched, and two still to go. It's been a busy 24 hours! This was maybe the fastest hatch I've ever done. I had to assist with three eggs (well, two I'm still in the process of, taking it slow). An olive egger couldn't get out on its own because its head wasn't tucked under its wing (it's out now and doing fine). The opal legbar had side pipped and is making zero progress, so I'm slowly working with it. And the BBS marans was failing to pip its internal membrane, so I managed to make it a breathing hole, and am waiting to see if it finishes the job.

Oh! And there was a surprise in which one my supposed legbar crosses came out as a black chick. Maybe it's part silkie (the person who sold me the eggs does have silkies)? Maybe it's actually an easter egger with a straight comb? I have questions.

Here's the first half of the pile. Note the literal black sheep in a pile of bresse/orpington/legbar yellow chicks. (The chipmunk is an olive egger).

On a side note, in last month's hatch-a-long Poultry Cell was recommended as a great alternative to Nurtidrench, possibly even better though I haven't tried it yet. It has all of the B vitamins, the RopaPoultry supplement that I occasionally give my flock does as well.

Eeeee!!! They're beautiful!!! Love love love! :love :wee:jumpy:jumpy:jumpy

Lots of people keep mixed flocks successfully. The difficulties will primarily come in when you have two roosters fighting for dominance and the size difference may put the little guys at a serious disadvantage.

The chicks of different sizes being raised together is always helpful. Though, when I integrated my bantam Cochin she ended up integrating as a lone hen and that's usually the hardest integration. I do have a very docile flock but I have chickens as small as my bantam Cochin all the way up to hefty English Orpingtons and everything in between with no issues.

My friend has an even bigger difference in her flock, she has a TINY Silver Duckwing OEGB up to some big Wyandottes.
Good point. I only have four hens now. And I can't have a rooster, so hopefully everyone will get along when they are old enough to integrate. If not, I can separate the bantams out with some of their hatch mates.

Oh I completely forgot to post the update on my eggs here last night! I got distracted, lol.
Silkies and BBS Marans were on day 3, I confirmed development in 11 of 12 Silkies, one looks infertile but I'll check again in a few days when I check the Marans. All 4 Sebastopol eggs are still looking good on day 10! And the 11 Olive Eggers are on day 14 looking great including the misfit eggs! :wee Then I had a surprise visit from my friend this morning with 5 more dirty but very welcome goose eggs!! :love

Yes!!! I’ve started using it instead of ND.
