Tis Time for a March 2020 Hatch-a-long!

This thread has been hit with quite a few losses. I'm sorry you had to be part of it and I'm sorry for your loss. I am glad though that you have some of her chicks that will be hatching, to me it's better to have a piece of her than nothing at all.

That is true...it would be worse not having any chicks at all. I have one noisy chick that hatched already 1 day + early already.

Yes, I keep them up to 3 weeks. They hatch fine... not as many... but they hatch. So when I feel I need to hatch more eggs or I didn't get enough eggs...I'll do that. Better a chance than eating those eggs.

Oh wow. I think I put 2 week old eggs in the bator I'm not sure. I was upset about my silver sebright roo so I put 10 eggs in the bator from my egg storage hutch. So this gives me hope that maybe they'll hatch even if they are a bit older.

I have2 bantam chicks from my roo so they're special right now even though the chubby silkie us killing me with it's sweet little fluff. I can feel more silkies in my future.

Well it’s hatch day for batch one of shipped eggs. Only one made it and it wiggling. EEEEEKKKKKK!!!!!!!!!! I love hatch day

I'm totally sad and feeling guilty.
I went to the coop this morning feeding the chickens. As I watched them eating their feed... I noticed that one hen was missing from the one breeding group. I went outside, thinking she might have not made it inside before the door closed automaticly.
No hen, no feathers.... I checked the water barrels and she was in one of them... drowned.
I am so upset... she died because I was not careful enough! I dumped the water out and I will figure out what I'll cover them with.
Her chicks will be hatching this weekend. I don't know if it's a comfort or even more upsetting.
Unfortunately, I won't know exactly which of the chicks are hers. Just the breeding group she was in. I grabed another egg from that breeding group and added it to the eggs I'll be putting in on the 22nd. Don't know if it's hers... but it could be.

Alright, REALLY sorry to triple post but AHHHH.
I follow a bunch of chicken people and homesteaders on instagram and they are all hatching eggs right now, too. So naturally I've been watching a lot of hatching videos and chick videos well I thought my volume was off, but i heard chirping! So I made sure the volume was all the way down and I heard it again!

Ran over to the Janoel 12, and 3 eggs are pipped! One BBS Marans may be zipping; it's hard to see in there.

So my one egg decided to try pip through the side of the egg through a vein

They're usually unfazed by pipping through a little blood vessel but I did have one get glued in by the amount of dried blood that pooled around it last month so just keep an eye on it. That was a first for me though so I don't think it's common.

I'm so sorry for your loss! I often leave out large dog bowls with water in addition to the chickens cup waterers, especially in the summer because it gets so hot here they can dip their head in there. Anyway, I had a broody hen raising peeps and I don't know why I didn't dump the bowl but I was outside with them not ten minutes before it happened and when I went back a little one had drowned in the bowl. I felt terrible!

Trying not to be the bearer of bad news, but the little gosling passed. We nicknamed him Curious George yesterday so now he’ll be laid to rest as that. He was a spunky little dude but I don’t think that life was for him. We also had a Serama chick pass last night, not too sure why but she looked squished. She had been in the brooder with two moms and 6 siblings so really a lot of things could’ve happened. I’ve been a downer this morning but I found some mixed goslings on CL. Probably picking one up today and I’m excited. We’re also finally getting my formal breeding pens and two large runs today too - for free!
