Tis Time for a March 2020 Hatch-a-long!

Pics
Actually I haul mail to the little post offices. Here in Nebraska they put the priority packages in big yellow bags. We have no clue to what they are or if they say fragile on them.
They don't do that where I live. When they say fragile here it seems like they ruin fragile boxes on purpose. I assume it's younger kids trying to be cool even though it's not cool at all. I've seen videos of people destroying packages on purpose, it's sad.

I will have to agree that if they say fragile on the box, it’s treated worse than a package that has nothing on it. Someone said that the main Texas hub was the worst, I agree as well. I’ve had eggs shipped from other parts of the US and had zero issues. The only one I’ve had problems with was Texas. They don’t give two chits if it’s fragile. My emu eggs were drop kicked. Not kidding you.

With that aside, I will still get eggs shipped in. I want to hatch all the babies so there’s some kind of bond with whatever animals we have. There aren’t too many people around here to buy hatching eggs from.

My friend lives in El Paso and every time I've ever sent her a package it always gets lost.

There are a lot of people in my area that have hatching eggs so I don't really have a problem with getting them. I honestly only use my eggs usually to hatch because I am biased and I think that my chicks are the cutest 😂

There are also people in my area that have emu hatching eggs so when it comes time for me to get them I will definitely be taking a drive so that I don't have to have them shipped.

Our mail goes 124 miles away to North Platte be sorted and then shipped back to our town. And I'm on a rural route that only gets mail on Tuesday Thursday and Saturdays. So 2nd day mail is non existent in my world. If we sell cattle at the salebarn on Thursday, the check goes out Friday nite to North Platte, and is brought back Saturday nite, and then delivered Tuesday.
But the guy that brings the mail from North Platte and he sits the eggs on the front seat of the truck. Then has the postal worker call me for pickup, so they're not sitting at the post offices for days.

Your post office sounds like a dream 😍 I wish that more post offices were like yours! I have even heard horror stories about chicks around here so I haven't ever bought chicks online. I would be devastated if I opened a box full of dead chicks.

Oh we've lost a bag of priority mail on December 18th. It was scanned in cody, valentine but never in North Platte. It just vanished in thin air. Our scanners are high tech. They know exactly where we are, how fast we are going, the amount of packages that need to be scanned at each post office. Big government knows everything.
But that's why I only buy eggs from neighboring states, Kansas and Iowa egg ship the best.

Well... hopefully I can hatch my own this summer! I only have two adult laying hens now and they stopped for the winter. They’re older and weren’t laying much before winter anyways. 1 egg a week. Have 5 pullets that should be laying in a month or so. Fingers crossed! Let’s not talk about the 12 roosters out of that batch :p

Plan is to breed the emus at some point after a couple years. Not for profit, but possibly meat? Or just grow the mob.

We wanted to do emus for meat too. We would keep a breeding pair and then their offspring would be for meat.

That's basically what we are doing with our chickens We have 14 pullets and hens and 2 roosters. We incubate their eggs and we were going to use the offspring for meat or to sell to people, but we have not gotten to the meat part because all of our chicks sold the last three hatches.

I wasn't expecting them all to sell. We have one left from that hatch that we are going to use for meat because it is a cockerel.

Just got my Marans hatching eggs in and wow...I can’t see the darn aircells to save my life. Even with my 1000 lumen flashlight. Sigh. One was cracked badly but the other 14 look perfect as far as no cracks. Just dying to know how bad the air cells look so that I know how to proceed. I guess I’ll just incubate them upright in cartons and turn manually until I figure it out. The aircells always get easier to see as the chick grows because there is some contrast in there. Here’s a pic of my eggs. Threw in a store bought brown egg to show color better.

Edited for spelling 😉
