Tis Time for a March 2020 Hatch-a-long!

Sometimes even the lighter eggs are harder to see through. Hopefully that's it! :fl
Hopefully I never throw anything out until after day 14.. that’s when it really shows what’s going on... I have been wanting this breed for a while and haven’t had much luck with hatching shipped eggs. Last time thermometer went bad... all is well with the new one though...

Yes, Yes you have a problem

I mean really, having free space in your incubator. What is the world coming too. shakes head sadly.

I sometimes think my hatching addiction is getting out of hand and then I get on BYC and chat with all you fine people and I feel better again. lol!

I’ve been so busy today I haven’t been able to get on here and ask this question:

I read Sally Sunshine’s article on incubating eggs. Fast forward to where it says “REMOVE RED VENT PLUGS, TOO MANY PEOPLE FORGET TO REMOVE THEM AT DAY 10!” Sorry for the dumb question, but does that mean once I’m on day 10 of incubation I need to remove both vent plugs for the remainder of the 21 days? I’m on Day 10 today.

I'm not sure which incubator you're using but for the most part I leave the vent plugs open on all of my incubators throughout the entire incubation. Good ventilation is important.

D7 Check Update!

First, the good news:
  • All of my non-BBS marans eggs (including the lavender marans, which is not very dark) were alive, with the exception of one local egg that looks like an early quitter. [These include partridge orpington, olive eggers, and legbar eggs that were covered by CCL, american bresse, and orpingtons].
  • Additionally, humidity is more or less on track. Sliiiiightly too dry, but I prefer that to too humid because I feel like it's easier to correct for. My first hatch was a nightmare with lots of drownings, so I'll always err on the side of dry.
The bad news:
  • None of the BBS marans are looking good. I think I saw one moving embryo. They aren't particularly dark specimens, so I should be able to see something. I was able to see activity by this point in darker marans eggs last year.
So, next steps!
  1. Eggtopsy on Egg 19.
  2. Increase average humidity by about 5-10%
  3. Sit on my hands about those marans eggs for a couple more days, but not-so-secretly be really disappointed. (I was already pretty disappointed in them, actually - in addition to only one being truly dark-ish, most of them are oblong)

I have a still air little giant incubator. Okay I shall go take them off. I guess I’ll just have to keep a closer eye on humidity now with vents open.

That refers to the styrofoam style, like a Farm Innovations. I also left mine open the entire time when I used one of those. If you've got them in still, I'd take 'em out.
