Tis Time for a March 2020 Hatch-a-long!

Pics
This is a great hatch-a-long to be in! Lots of experienced people to help out. This is my first hatch ever...I picked up my eggs and drove them home, so they probably had a much gentler ride than a lot of shipped eggs but still! I'm trying to hatch BBS ameraucana, BBS and black copper marans, lavender orpington, and salmon faverolles...I really want these breeds so am hoping for a good hatch rate!

Fingers crossed for you!
I have orps in my incubator BBS, Lavender, Mauve and Chocolate are the possibilities. If you picked your eggs up and drove them home I'm betting they have a better chance of hatching than regular shipped eggs. When is your hatch date?

I LOVE my orpingtons, they are huge sweethearts. I would love to have a rainbow of them. The lady I bought my lavender orpie eggs from also does jubilee orpies 🤩😍. I'm dying to order some, but I gotta wait a little bit so much husband doesn't get too annoyed with my poultry obsession 🤣

I find if you just keep them all in the same brooder they never notice when new ones are added ;)

My eggs ship on March 2nd!! I should get them on the 3rd. How long do I let them settle? I have read 6 hours and 24 hours

I usually do 24 hours of settling with the pointy end down for shipped eggs. But there is one time I did less. I recently had a batch shipped the Thursday before Presidents’ Day and they got stuck at the post office until Tuesday! I was soooo bummed but the seller literally puts them from nest to box so they were still fresh enough. But I didn’t wait 24 hours to set them. I think I let them sit for 2 hours. They are in my incubator now and seem to be developing well, so hopefully it was a good decision.

This is definitely something I will need to utilize 😅He had to gently coax one of my more flighty chickens out of a tree today after spooking her twice...he was just shaking his head the whole time, thigh deep in snow..probably cursing me under his breath for insisting on getting chickens.

I did catch him looking at the MH catalog, though 🧐

Nice variety! I do love BBS anything plus blue and dark brown eggs :loveThis is my third incubator hatch. My first lot I picked up as well and got a great hatch rate but shocking pullet to cockerel ratio (3/14). My second is still in progress and it's been a huge fail. I set 16 quail egg, 4 developed and only 3 have made it to hatch day with 2 pipping as I type..
Next lot I'm doing Welsummer, Cockoo Marans, Olive eggers and some fun "frizzle coloured layers"

Yeah, crossing my fingers for more pullets than cockerels 🤞

I'd love to do quail someday, but probably won't get to it this year...I want to get really good at chickens since I have a free egg supply out front lol. Please show us your quail babies when they hatch; I hope they make it!

Sounds like you are setting some cool birds! 🤩

I want an extra rooster this year so totally fine with me to have some to choose from.
