Tis Time for a March 2020 Hatch-a-long!

I’m so excited! I just placed my order for a dozen hatching eggs from Sky Girl Farm. She has a group of Black Ameraucanas directly from Paul Smith and she agreed to sell me a half dozen of their eggs. She usually just sells mixed ameraucana lots with white and lavender too, but I only need black. I also got 1/2 dozen of her Black Copper Marans.
I’m going to keep all the chicks that hatch from that group so I’ll be selling all the ones from my current batch, because I only want to grow out one group of chicks this season so they need to hatch within a week or so of each other. Sky Girl Farm eggs wont ship for a couple weeks so, I just asked Gypsy Hen if I can get a full dozen of her BBS Ameraucanas so hopefully I can get that timing to line up and I’ll growout all those babies too. I’m excited for the April hatch along now and it’s still Feb.

I got my new blue Ameraucana cockerel the other day, so everything is falling into place for my Olive Egger and Ameraucana project.

So exciting!!

Update: first 14 shipped eggs only one developing. On blood ring rest nothing.... . Second batch of shipped to be continued.......... will candle Saturday...


Question when do you throw out possible no development eggs.. I am sure they are not developing but don’t want to risk throwing out an egg that may not be showing but is still ok... I am 90 percent sure all but the one is bad but want to make sure so I would like to wait until day 14 but I am also scared of one to blow up. Nothin smells or is seeping at this point...

So when does everyone make that decision?

I am 90 percent sure all but the one is bad but want to make sure so I would like to wait until day 14 but I am also scared of one to blow up. Nothin smells or is seeping at this point...

So when does everyone make that decision?

I've done enough eggs I toss them at 7 days unless they are dark and I can't see in well. They aren't going to explode at 14 days though so keep them in longer if you like.

I'm sorry! I hope the second batch does much better for you!
It depends on the egg, like today I have no question that this day 5 egg is a clear but with some breeds, like Marans I might wait as late as day 15 if it doesn't smell!

I think you’d smell an egg before it explodes. I had some really dark Marans eggs my first hatch and I literally left them in the whole time because I was pretty sure they were clear but not 100% because my Candling flashlight was weak and they never even smelled.

Day 5 for the Olive Eggers. It looks like I have development in 11 of the eggs, I need to charge my flashlight, 1 is definitely infertile.

You will definitely be able to smell it before the explosion happens. They reek!

I tossed my yolk eggs on Day 10, but I’m sure I could have gone to Day 14, but it was pretty obvious it wasn’t developing.

I did a little early candling just to see how things might be going. Most are looking good. One that my friend gave me has a really good looking embryo but the air cell is on the side of the egg. I've never seen that before. It's not tilted off the top, floating, or saddle shaped. It's firmly attached smack on the side. Think it'll still hatch?
